Attaining the Supreme Lord<br />

TEXT 1<br />

arjuna uvaca<br />

kim tad brahma kim adhyatmam<br />

kim karma purusottama<br />

adhibhutam ca kim proktam<br />

adhidaivam kim ucyate<br />

Arjuna said: O Purushottama, what is meant by each of the terms<br />

´Brahman´, ´Adhyatma´, ´Karma´, ´Adhibhuta´, and ´Adhidaiva´?<br />

TEXT 2<br />

adhiyajnah katham ko 'tra<br />

dehe 'smin madhusudana<br />

prayana-kale ca katham<br />

jneyo 'si niyatatmabhih<br />

O Madhusudana, what is Adhiyajna(Lord of sacrifice) in this body? How do<br />

the persons engaged in devotional service know You at the time of their death?<br />

TEXT 3<br />

sri-bhagavan uvaca<br />

aksaram brahma paramam<br />

svabhavo 'dhyatmam ucyate<br />

bhuta-bhavodbhava-karo<br />

visargah karma-samjnitah<br />

The Supreme Lord said: the eternal, indestructible and unchangeable<br />

living entity is called Brahman, and his eternal nature is called Adhyatma.<br />

Activities performed for the development of these material bodies are called<br />

karma.<br />

TEXT 4<br />

adhibhutam ksaro bhavah<br />

purusas cadhidaivatam<br />

adhiyajno 'ham evatra<br />

dehe deha-bhrtam vara<br />

The changeable and perishable is called Adhibhuta. Adhidaiba means the<br />

Universal Virata Purusa who is the Presiding Deity of the demigods and of the<br />

senses. I am known as Adhiyajna, the indwelling Super-soul in the heart of all<br />

living entities.<br />
