The conflict between the Christians and Muslims in Ethiopia is important for more than<br />

just the aspects <strong>of</strong> religious conflict. It is indicative <strong>of</strong> the region’s status as a ‘contest periphery’<br />

and it marks a fundamental shift in the position <strong>of</strong> Ethiopia in the larger context <strong>of</strong> the worldsystem,<br />

as evidenced by the supply <strong>of</strong> musketeers. No longer does Ethiopia benefit from its<br />

position as a bridge between two interdependent networks <strong>of</strong> exchange, able to build political<br />

stability based on the extraction <strong>of</strong> economic surplus from trade. Instead, it has become a
