GLOSSARY OF TERMS<br />

Aliquot: A small portion ofthe urine specimen extracted for testing atthe laboratory.<br />

Controlled substances: Drugs (legal and illegal) listed on Schedule I - V, a listing of<br />

potentially addictive chemicals. Schedule I are illicit drugs <strong>with</strong> no legitimate medical use that's<br />

addictive/abuse potential is most severe.<br />

Custody and Control: Establishing the security and identification of a specimen by a<br />

documented "Chain of Custody" each time the spedmen changes hands.<br />

Cut-off levels: The identified quantity of drug metabolites in urine above which a<br />

spedmen is considered positive. Cut-off levels in drug testing are expressed in<br />

nanograms per milliliter of urine. Or, the identified quantity of alcohol in a breath sample,<br />

above which a breath test is considered positive. In breath alcohol testing, cut-off levels are<br />

expressed in grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath.<br />

Dilute Specimen: A urine spedmen <strong>with</strong> lower than expected specific gravity and<br />

creatinine values. Urine <strong>with</strong> specific gravity less than 1.003 and creatinine less than 20<br />

is generally considered dilute.<br />

Drug Cl<strong>as</strong>ses : The cl<strong>as</strong>ses of controlled substances tested for in urinalysis for drug of abuse.<br />

The five cl<strong>as</strong>ses most commonly tested for are: marijuana, cocaine, opiates,<br />

amphetamines, and phencyclidine.<br />

Drug Metabolites: The end product of the body's metabolism of drugs detectable by urinalysis.<br />
