island difficult.<br />

As expected, <strong>the</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e sanctuary is located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> south-eastern portion of <strong>the</strong> reef (see<br />

Figure 4.1). It extends about 93 to 100m from <strong>the</strong> shorel<strong>in</strong>e to <strong>the</strong> crest 6–7m depth. The<br />

slope is estimated at 50–60 degrees at 17m deep (Reboton and Div<strong>in</strong>agracia, 1997; Russ and<br />

Alcala, 1996). Soft corals are found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shallow portion, while <strong>the</strong> reef crest and slope<br />

have a high cover of live hard corals. 31 Figure 4.1 shows a comparison of coral cover from<br />

1981 to 2002.<br />
