This will provide themost evidenced based treatments for heavily dependent smokers who are generallyin the most deprived areas. It is anticipated that this will contribute to improving quitoutcomes for the most needy smokers.Smoking and Pregnancy ServicesDSSS has provided a specialist service to help pregnant smokers and their familiesstop smoking since 2000. The service aims to reduce the percentage of pregnantsmokers in Dudley and consequently have a positive impact on perinatal and infantmorbidity and mortality. There has been a steady increase in women accessing theservice since 2002. Dudley Stop Smoking and Pregnancy (DSS&P) service hasbeen used nationally as an example of good practice through Infant Mortality andTobacco Control National Support Team visits and provides leadership for the WestMidlands Regional Smoking and Pregnancy network.A recent national audit of smoking and pregnancy services was commissioned bythe West Midlands Government Office to determine the performance andeffectiveness of the West Midlands Smoking and Pregnancy Services, compared toother England PCT services. The analysis has placed Dudley in the top 10% (12 th of147) of smoking and pregnancy services nationally for women quitting on a „quitneed‟ basis, and top performing for the West Midlands Region (Figure 5). Thisinformation reassures us that Dudley is providing a good service for those who aremost at need.99
