In this chart, the data <strong>for</strong> <strong>Dudley</strong> has been grouped into quintiles <strong>for</strong><strong>Dudley</strong> only, whereas the England level data is grouped into quintiles <strong>for</strong> the wholeof England.The income received by households is affected by direct taxation such as incometax, national insurance and council tax. The ratio of the top/bottom quintile <strong>for</strong> grossincome is 1.5 <strong>for</strong> <strong>Dudley</strong> and 2.0 <strong>for</strong> England, whereas this ratio is slightly reduced<strong>for</strong> net income, when taking account of direct taxes, to 1.4 and 1.7 respectively. Asteeper gradient is seen between the bottom and top quintiles <strong>for</strong> England than <strong>for</strong><strong>Dudley</strong>.The spatial distribution of income deprivation in <strong>Dudley</strong> is shown in Figure 6. Thismap shows income deprivation in <strong>Dudley</strong>, based on in<strong>for</strong>mation from the Index ofMultiple Deprivation (IMD) 2007. The income deprivation index is the proportion ofpeople who are income deprived in an area, ranked nationally.44
