CRIMINAL JUSTICE (CJ)CJ-1003 INTRODUCTION TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE (3 SEMESTER HOURS)This course provides an overview of the criminal justice system in the United States of America.It examines the history, function, structures, processes and interactions of the three principlecomponents of America criminal justice: law enforcement, courts and corrections.CJ-2003 INTRODUCTION TO COURTS AND CRIMINAL LAW (3 SEMESTER HOURS)This course examines the structure, theory and practice of the legal system in the United Statesof America. Included in this course are such issues as federal and state court systems, civil,criminal and appellate process, basic criminal law concepts, substantive criminal law,procedural criminal law, sentencing, and the participants in the American legal process.Prerequisite: CJ-1003.CJ-2103 INTRODUCTION TO CORRECTIONS (3 SEMESTER HOURS)This course examines the historical development, current policy and practice, and futuredirection of the correctional system in the United States of America. Included in this course isan overview of such issues as criminal sentencing, jails, prisons, rehabilitation, parole, probationand community-based corrections. Prerequisite: CJ-1003.CJ-3003 CRIMINOLOGY (3 SEMESTER HOURS)This course provides an intensive examination of the nature of crime, causal theories of crimeand criminal behavior. Prerequisite: CJ-1003.CJ-3203 INTRODUCTION TO LAW ENFORCEMENT (3 SEMESTER HOURS)This course examines the history, philosophy and application of law enforcement in the UnitedStates of America. Special attention is given the types and methods of patrol activities andtheir tactical considerations, the powers and limitations of the police officer, and police conductand decision making. Prerequisite: CJ-1003.CJ- 4203 CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION (3 SEMESTER HOURS)This course is designed to provide a general introduction to the process of crime sceneinvestigations. The primary goal of this course is to develop an understanding of identifying,properly evaluating, and analyzing crime scenes. This course will discuss and evaluate differenttypes of crime scenes and how to handle such situations. Students will review crime scenephotographs and identify important aspects of the crime in order to provide proper analyses.Prerequisite: CJ-1003.CJ-4503 CRIMINAL JUSTICE INTERNSHIP (3 SEMESTER HOURS)The course consists of a supervised field placement in an agency related to criminal justice suchas family court, civil court, criminal court, a law enforcement agency, or a correctional facility.Prerequisite: CJ 1003 and approval from the department chair of arts and science.206
