MATHEMATICS (MA)MA-1150 ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA (3 SEMESTER HOURS)This course is a <strong>University</strong> preparatory study course and does not apply toward the degreeprograms. It is designed for students who have had little or no algebra. The major topics of thiscourse include sets, real numbers and their properties, using proportions to solve problems,law of exponents, basic operations with polynomials, solving linear equations and linearinequalities, as well as an introduction to factoring, rational expressions, roots and radicals, andgraphing in two variables. Minimum passing grade is “C” (2.00).MA-2034 INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA (3 SEMESTER HOURS)This course is designed to give students the fundamental algebra skills needed for othermathematics and science courses. Topics include first-degree equations and inequalities, linearequations in two variables, systems of linear equations, polynomials, factoring, rationalexpressions, rational exponents, radicals, and quadratic equations. Prerequisite: two units ofhigh school algebra. Minimum passing grade is “C” (2.00). Offered Fall semesters.MA-2044 COLLEGE ALGEBRA (3 SEMESTER HOURS)A study in mathematics including equations and inequalities, exponents and polynomials, roots,radicals, quadratic equations in two variables, system of linear equations, conic sections,logarithmic functions, and sequences and series. Prerequisite: score of eighteen (18) orgreater on the Enhanced ACT and two years of high school algebra or Intermediate Algebrawith a grade of “C” (2.00) or higher. Minimum passing grade is “C”. Offered Fall and Springsemesters.MA-2133 APPLIED STATISTICS (3 SEMESTER HOURS)Basic statistical concepts, elementary probability theory, normal curve and application,measures of dispersion, introduction to sampling theory, hypothesis testing, correlation andregression analysis. Prerequisite: MA-2044. Offered Fall semesters.MA-2134 TRIGONOMETRY (3 SEMESTER HOURS)The basic analytic and geometric properties of the trigonometric functions are studied. Apreparatory class for Calculus I. Prerequisite: MA-2044 or a score of twenty (20) or greater onthe Enhanced ACT for mathematics. Offered Spring semester of odd-numbered years.MA-2144 ANALYTICAL GEOMETRY AND CALCULUS I (3 SEMESTER HOURS)Topics include limits, continuity functions, the derivative, applications of the derivative, andindefinite integration. Prerequisite: MA-<strong>2011</strong> and MA-2134 or a score of twenty-three (23) orgreater on the Enhanced ACT for mathematics. Offered Fall semesters.MA-2263 ANALYTICAL GEOMETRY AND CALCULUS II (3 SEMESTER HOURS)Topics include the definite integral, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, applications ofintegration, integration techniques, and transcendent functions. Prerequisite: MA-2144.Offered Spring semester of even-numbered years.228
