ACTIVITIES PLANNED
FOR 2007
IN PARKLAND

I hope everyone enjoyed the Holidays. I extend my wishes to all for a
healthy, prosperous and happy New Year. Hopefully, everyone has a
fantastic 2007! As I make my way around the City to various events and
City programs, it is great to see so many people taking advantage of the
many wonderful events offered by our Leisure Services Department and
City Library. The City offers so many fantastic events and programs, from
field trips for our seniors to day off from school programs, there really is
something for everyone. Is your family taking advantage of some of these
great programs? If not, I encourage you to check them out. While there are
way too many to mention in this article, here are some upcoming activities
that you may want to look into.
Over the last month, we re-started our “Movies in the Park” series.
A few hundred people gathered at Terramar Park, laid out their blankets
and chairs and saw a movie under the stars. During January, there will be
two more movie nights at Terramar. On January 13, the City will show Hoot
and on January 27, the movie will be Ice Age 2: the Meltdown. The local
schools sell popcorn and candy to raise money for their PTA groups and it’s
a fun night for the entire family. Grab a blanket and your lawn chair and
come out and join your friends and neighbors! January also brings us MLK
day, on Friday, January 12 at 3:30 p.m. the library will show a film biography
called Martin Luther King, Jr: the Man and the Dream”. This will be
followed by a discussion of the impact he has had on us and society. The
Library offers tremendous programing for residents of all ages.
Computer classes are offered during both the daytime and in the
evenings, from computer basics to some more sophisticated computer
classes all levels of computer knowledge are covered. Check out the library
website for various yoga classes for children, book signings and other family
friendly events. These library programs fill up fast so contact the library
staff for more details. If you have teenagers, you may want to have them
check out the Parkland Teen Advisory Group. The Group, under the
leadership of Gerri Dougherty in our Leisure Services Department, helps
create the programs offered by the City for our teens. They plan social
events, obtain leadership skills, receive volunteer service hours, and help
with special events, camp and library programs. The next meeting of the
Teen Advisory Group is set for Thursday January 18, at
City Hall at 7:00 pm.
The Annual Concert is fast approaching, so save March 24, 2007 on
your calendar. It will be a fun family event so bring the kids! There will be
live entertainment, food, and plenty of fun for all generations! All of these
great community events take a coordinated effort between the
City Commission, City management, the Leisure Services Department
and great volunteers that help the City. On February 3, we will have our
traditional VIP (Volunteers Improving Parkland) Thank You party which
will again take place outside of City Hall. This is the Parkland’s way of
thanking the many, many volunteers that do so much for the City. I hope to
see many of you there.

added. These types of events are consistent with our mission
