SCHOOL HAPPENINGS<br />
On November 3rd <strong>the</strong> Stoneman Douglas High School Boys Swim Team<br />
made school history by bringing home <strong>the</strong> first Boys’ Team Title as <strong>the</strong><br />
2006 FHSAA Class 3A Florida State Swimming and Diving Champions,<br />
concluding <strong>the</strong>ir perfect season. They won all <strong>the</strong>ir regular season<br />
tri-meets with a 12-0 record: <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> 2006 County Champions,<br />
District Champions, Regional Champions and State Champions.<br />
The 2006 Douglas Boys State Team members are: Kevin Bandy, Kyle<br />
Bandy, Justin Grigull, Rory Grigull, Colton Kleynhans, Greg Naranjo,<br />
Ryan O’Shaughnessy, Nicholas Popov, and Nicholas Schwab. The<br />
Douglas Boys team had members in all 11 swim events at State. In medal<br />
standings, Kleynhans<br />
took gold in <strong>the</strong> 200<br />
yd. freestyle with an<br />
All-American time<br />
of 1:41.40. Kevin<br />
Bandy took bronze<br />
in <strong>the</strong> 200 yd.<br />
freestyle. Grigull<br />
took bronze in <strong>the</strong> 50<br />
yd. freestyle. Grigull,<br />
Popov, Schwab and<br />
Bandy took silver in<br />
<strong>the</strong> 200 yd. freestyle<br />
relay. Grigull, Popov, Kleynhans, and Bandy took gold in <strong>the</strong> 400 yd.<br />
freestyle relay with an All-American time of 3:09.16. Kleynhans finished<br />
out his high school swim career a two-time All-American.The only o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
swimmer not to return next year is senior Greg Naranjo.<br />

DJ Sneir, Britney Busch, Caroline Kuczynski and Stephanie Kuczynski.<br />
Sneir and Kuczynski finished out <strong>the</strong>ir high school careers as 2-time<br />

All-Americans. Busch was also an All-American in California before<br />
moving to Florida, closing out her high school career a 3-time All-<br />
American. Kuczynski, a two-time All-American will be back next year as<br />
a junior.The nine girls who went to State for Douglas finished 8th overall<br />
in total team points. The Girls State team consists of <strong>the</strong> 4 girls listed<br />
and Ali Matias, Stephanie Briganty, Brittany Bellomo, Kristen Vitro and<br />
Valerie Wexler.<br />
Dana Holmquist became <strong>the</strong> Douglas swim coach last year and was<br />
named <strong>the</strong> 2005 All-County Girls' Coach of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Year</strong> by <strong>the</strong><br />
Sun-Sentinel. Dawn Holmquist, his wife, is a dive coach for several<br />
different high schools including coaching four Douglas divers. Dawn<br />
took one Douglas diver, Delaney Zukowski to regionals, and placed second<br />
at County Champs. Their own daughter, Haley Holmquist of Coral<br />
Glades High School, finished out her diving high school career this year<br />
with 4th place at State 3A. Outside of <strong>the</strong> high school season <strong>the</strong> swimmers<br />
in large part are coached by <strong>the</strong>ir club coaches at <strong>the</strong> Coral Springs<br />
Swim Club. They are: Michael Lohberg, Chris Jackson and Bruno Darzi.<br />
The swim and dive meets are run simultaneously, alternating girls<br />
race, boys race through all <strong>the</strong> swimming and diving events, but scored<br />
separately.<br />
