SCHOOL HAPPENINGS
On November 3rd the Stoneman Douglas High School Boys Swim Team
made school history by bringing home the first Boys’ Team Title as the
2006 FHSAA Class 3A Florida State Swimming and Diving Champions,
concluding their perfect season. They won all their regular season
tri-meets with a 12-0 record: they are the 2006 County Champions,
District Champions, Regional Champions and State Champions.
The 2006 Douglas Boys State Team members are: Kevin Bandy, Kyle
Bandy, Justin Grigull, Rory Grigull, Colton Kleynhans, Greg Naranjo,
Ryan O’Shaughnessy, Nicholas Popov, and Nicholas Schwab. The
Douglas Boys team had members in all 11 swim events at State. In medal
standings, Kleynhans
took gold in the 200
yd. freestyle with an
All-American time
of 1:41.40. Kevin
Bandy took bronze
in the 200 yd.
freestyle. Grigull
took bronze in the 50
yd. freestyle. Grigull,
Popov, Schwab and
Bandy took silver in
the 200 yd. freestyle
relay. Grigull, Popov, Kleynhans, and Bandy took gold in the 400 yd.
freestyle relay with an All-American time of 3:09.16. Kleynhans finished
out his high school swim career a two-time All-American.The only other
swimmer not to return next year is senior Greg Naranjo.

as well. They too
had a 12-0 season, are
County, District and
Regional Champions.

medley relay team
took home bronze
medals with an All-American time as their best showing at the 2006
FHSAA Florida State Swimming and Diving Championship. They are:
DJ Sneir, Britney Busch, Caroline Kuczynski and Stephanie Kuczynski.
Sneir and Kuczynski finished out their high school careers as 2-time

All-Americans. Busch was also an All-American in California before
moving to Florida, closing out her high school career a 3-time All-
American. Kuczynski, a two-time All-American will be back next year as
a junior.The nine girls who went to State for Douglas finished 8th overall
in total team points. The Girls State team consists of the 4 girls listed
and Ali Matias, Stephanie Briganty, Brittany Bellomo, Kristen Vitro and
Valerie Wexler.
Dana Holmquist became the Douglas swim coach last year and was
named the 2005 All-County Girls' Coach of the Year by the
Sun-Sentinel. Dawn Holmquist, his wife, is a dive coach for several
different high schools including coaching four Douglas divers. Dawn
took one Douglas diver, Delaney Zukowski to regionals, and placed second
at County Champs. Their own daughter, Haley Holmquist of Coral
Glades High School, finished out her diving high school career this year
with 4th place at State 3A. Outside of the high school season the swimmers
in large part are coached by their club coaches at the Coral Springs
Swim Club. They are: Michael Lohberg, Chris Jackson and Bruno Darzi.
The swim and dive meets are run simultaneously, alternating girls
race, boys race through all the swimming and diving events, but scored
separately.
