THRIVE AT THE SOL

A-ONE CAST, SKILLED DIRECTION
Playwright Brad Fraser provides his audience with a peek at seven people
who are looking for love, but also gives theatre-goers a mystery to solve
in the sex-driven play currently at the Sol Theatre Project in
Fort Lauderdale. It’s title – Unidentified Human Remains And The True
Nature of Love – gives just an inkling of what is in store when you take in
this riveting performance at this tiny fringe theatre which thrives on
producing off-beat, often gay-themed stories.
This production – one of the best presented in years at Sol – is about
individuals in a large urban areas who are searching for relationships, love
or just plain sex – homosexual, heterosexual, even sado-masochism. But, it
is also a mystery in which the audience is attuned to select which one of the
seven is a serial killer.This play is definitely a mystery waiting to be solved.
Also, in the mix is the question of what really is “love.”
Warning – there is nudity (both male and female) but it is done for reality
rather than sensationalism. After all, this play is about sex and love –
and sex in the nude is not unexpected.
The credit for this intriguing avant-garde thriller should go equally
to the visionary author and the director Robert Hooker, who has earned
a reputation as being a fearless producer of off-beat plays. His stamp
of fearlessness is apparent in this production. He keeps the stage movement
flowing step by step so that the audience is intrigued to select the
serial killer.
But, it is also necessary to praise the A-One cast: Matthew Chapman,
Erynn Dalton, Kim Ehly, Angel Perez, Jeison Tomi and especially
Dominick Giombetti and Julia Clearwood. When Giombetti and
Clearwood are on stage, their presence is felt throughout the theatre.
Giombetti, who first came to attention in last year’s Trafficking In Broken
Hearts, and Clearwood are a dynamic duo.
But, without distracting in any way from the director or actors, the playwright’s
verbal brilliance is at the heart of this sometimes-down-righthumorous
– yet serious – play. Author Fraser is one of Canada’s most
versatile writers for stage and film.
Like all of the Sol’s productions, this one is not for everyone.
Yes, leave the kids at home! This theatrical experience is for open-minded
adults only.
