Little Givers…Big Hearts
Donna Klein Jewish Academy’s Tzedakah Committee brightened the
Chanukah holiday for many children by collecting and donating gifts to
the children of Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options ( JAFCO).
Committee members are school ambassadors who share information with
their classmates, and facilitate community projects focusing on tzedakah –
which means justice or fairness. (To Jews today, the term tzedakah
connotes giving charitable contributions, but the term originates in
another realm. In the Bible, tzedakah means “righteous behavior” and is
often paired with “justice.” In Jewish thought and tradition, material
support for those in need is not a matter of “charity”—a term that implies
generosity beyond what may be expected—but a requirement.) At DKJA,
students are taught that giving to the less fortunate is not only a generous
act, it is an act of justice. Committee members from DKJA’s Lower
School, shown above, decorated collection boxes and coordinated the
effort, along with DKJA faculty, staff and PTO members. More than 100
gifts were collected as a result of the project.
