As mentioned above, provision ofassets was the main post tsunami intervention in the fisheries sector. Thetable shows poor targeting in boat distribution in both resettled and rebuilthouseholds. However, better targeting and distribution is observed amongrebuilt fishery households than resettled.In addition, some households who received boats complained that thequality of boats and nets received were not up to standard.100

It is important to note that 77% of resettled households aremore than 200m from the sea (see Table 5.1.1.4). Given this situation,around 32% of resettled fisher households have problems in accessing thesea and 14% have mentioned that they have to use bicycles, three wheelersor buses to get there and many fishers find traveling to the sea an additionalcost. There is interest in building a common place to store boats, nets andother fishing gear safely but this has not yet happened. As a solution somefishers use their former house as storage for their boats and spend the nightthere in order to reach the sea easily while their families live in the resettledhouse. However, this is not an option for those whose houses within thebuffer zone have not been rebuilt.6.1.3 Changes in livelihood activities17% of the resettled households have changed their livelihoods due to theirfishing assets being destroyed or being resettled much further away from thesea. Masonry has become an alternative for the majority of those who changedlivelihoods.101
