Section 4 is an explanation of theprocess of gathering data for our study. Section 5 proposes a categorisationof livelihoods that is more amenable to the CID setting. Section 6 presentsfour case studies of households from the main sample <strong>and</strong> identifies somesalient features that underlie livelihood losses. Sections 7 <strong>and</strong> 8 extend thiswork with a cross sectional analysis of the complete sample. Section 9contrasts livelihood restoration in CID <strong>and</strong> DID settings. Section 10 providessome concluding remarks.2 <strong>Displacement</strong> <strong>and</strong> IDP IncomeThe general underst<strong>and</strong>ing is that development projects have an overallpositive impact on the population of a country. To put it in economic terms,the development projects are welfare maximising. However, Cernea (1995:Figure 1), using resettler’s income curve, identifies that there are significantwelfare losses for IDPs, even if all lost assets were replaced or compensatedby the project.
