What is the Sunnah?Linguistically, Sunnah is an Arabic word which means a path or away. However, in Islam, it is a primary source of law taken from thesayings, actions and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (peaceand blessing upon him). As Muslims, we believe that the lawProphet Muhammad (peace and blessing upon him) came with, is adivine revelation from our Creator, Allah. However many peoplebelieve that the Qur’an is the only form of divine revelation, as it isthe literal word of Allah. This view is incorrect as it contradicts theQur’an itself. About the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessingupon him), Allah says:“Your companion (Muhammad) is neither astray nor being misled.Nor does he speak of his own desire. It is (only) the revelation withwhich he is inspired” (Sura An Najm 53:2-4).Thus as Muslims, we are required to believe that the Qur’an andSunnah go hand in hand together as our sources of islamic law. Bothare revelation from Allah, the most High. The Qur’an is composed ofthe actual words of Allah, whereas the Sunnah is expressed throughthe words, actions and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (peaceand blessing upon him). Another difference is that the Qur’an isrecited formally in the prayers whereas the Sunnah is not.As a way of life, Islam is perfect and complete. However, such arethe times that we live in, that some of the liberal elites from theMuslims choose to deny aspects of Islam to suit their own needsand desires. It is even sadder, that many choose to deny the Sunnahin particular. However this is clearly wrong, as the saying of theProphet (pbuh) indicates: “I have been given the Qur’an andsomething similar to it besides it. Yet a time will come when a manleaning on his couch will say ‘follow the Qur’an only; what you findin it permissible, take as permissible, and what you find asforbidden, take as forbidden’. But verily what the Messenger ofAllah has forbidden is like what Allah has forbidden”.Young Muslims, What they should know about Islam Page - 20
