Islam promotes a holistic approach to worship that encompassesspreading justice and compassion in the world through one’s dailyinteractions with people. Smiling at someone, visiting the sick, anddefending an innocent person who is being oppressed are allconsidered acts of worship as well. <strong>The</strong>se forms of worshipexemplify the importance of good manners in Islam. NarratedAbudullah Ibn Amar (RA): Muhammad (Blessings and Peace beupon him) once said, “<strong>The</strong> best among you are those who have thebest character.” (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)Islam has a practical approach to living that positively transformspeople’s individual connection to God and fellow humans. Islamoffers guidance on all matters of life, including one’s diet, manners,and social relationships. God tells <strong>Muslims</strong> to eat everything “goodand pure” while adhering to simple dietary restrictions such asavoidance of pork, alcohol and anything slaughtered in the name ofother than God.When it comes to dressing and behavior, modesty and humility areordained for both men and women. Narrated Zayd Ibn Talha (RA):Muhammad (Blessings and Peace be upon him) has stated, “Everyreligion has an essential character and the essential character ofIslam is modesty.” (Malik)Parental obedience and dutifulness is integral to Islam. Men andwomen are to sanctify their relations in a marital contract, takingtheir spousal roles and family units seriously.
