Unlike conventional books, the Qur’an does notcontain information, ideas or arguments about specific themesarranged in a literary order. That is why a stranger to the Qur’an, onhis first approach to it, is baffled when he does not readily find itstheme. Reader also realizes that Qur’an is not divided into chapterswith different topics treated separately. He also does not seeinstructions for life's various aspects arranged in a sequential order.He does find that it deals with creeds, gives moral instructions, laysdown laws, invites people to Islam, admonishes the disbelievers,draws lessons from historical events, administers warnings, givesglad tidings, all blended together in a beautiful manner. The samesubject is repeated in different ways and one topic follows the otherwithout any apparent connection. Sometimes a new topic crops upin the middle of another without any apparent reason.The diction of the speaker and of those being spoken to and thedirection of the address change without notice. There is no sign ofsections and divisions anywhere. Historical events are presentedbut not as in history books. The problems of philosophy andmetaphysics are treated in a manner different from that of thetextbooks on these subjects. Man and the universe are mentionedin a language different from that of the natural sciences. Likewise itfollows its own method of solving cultural, political, social andeconomic problems and deals with the principles and injunctions oflaw in a manner quite different from that of the sociologists,Young Muslims, What they should know about Islam Page - 44
