S+T.3.3: Spin-offs and start-upsRelevance:This indicator describes the spin-offs or start-ups already created aswell as the opportunities for creating further spin-offs or start-ups resultingfrom the facility’s activities.Compilation:• Identify and report, which spin-offs and start-ups have already beencreated due to the activities of the (planned) RI (ex-ante and expost).• Provide information about the activity field, number of createdworking places, annual turnover and trends, as well as growth perspectivesof the spin-offs and start-ups (ex-ante and ex-post).• Identify and report, which opportunities for the creation of furtherspin-offs and start-ups associated with the activities of the(planned) RI exist (ex-ante and ex-post).• Interviews with suitable experts from reference facilities (e.g.CEO) and/or managers from their spin-off / start-up companies• Analysis of documents from reference facilities, as annual reportsor reports of their spin-offs / start-upsData analysis methods:• Descriptive content analysis• NarrativesReferences:NoneDefinitions and explanations:Spin-off refers to a new company created by the (new) facility out ofone of its activities and based on IPRs, new technologies, or productscreated by the (new) RI. The spin-off can involve also external partners.Start-up refers to all other types of new companies created as a consequenceof the (new) facility’s activities, as e.g. new companies foundedby employees of the (new) RI to exploit independently new knowledgeand skills or by industrial partners to commercialise jointly owned IPRsor jointly developed innovations.Data sources and collection methods:• Interviews suitable experts involved in the project or the facilitymanagement (e.g. project coordinator, scientific manager, technologytransfer / industrial liaison officer, etc.)• Documents analysis, e.g. project proposal or annual reports135
