248 WŁADYSŁAW A. SERCZYK AND LAWRENCE D. ORTONcentury Galicia grew, he became convinced that a precondition toovercoming many years of mistrust and bitterness was to provide anhonest and forthright account of the Galician Ukrainians' experience. His profound hope was that his works might make a modest contributionto surmounting prejudice and to fostering understanding amongfuture generations of Poles and Ukrainians.Janek bore the pain and hardship of debilitating illness for the lastten years of his life with dignity and without complaint. Never to medid he speak in bitterness of the mishandled initial operation andensuing treatment that subsequently rendered his heart ailment irremediable. In failing health and against the advice of his doctors, Janek availedhimself of an opportunity to return to Lviv and Kiev in the winter andspring of 1978 to gather materials on another critical phase of Polish-Ukrainian relations in Galicia, the years of Michał Bobrzynski'sviceroyalty on the eve of World War I. Although gravely weakenedphysically, Janek endured the rigors of that stay and completed hisresearch. My last visit with Janek was in August 1978 at his family's home inZawada near Nowy Sącz, together with his devoted friend and fellowCracow historian, Jerzy Zdrada. The toll taken by his exhausting stayin the Soviet Union and the ravages of advancing disease had alteredhis appearance but not his spirit. Although he knew that he had littletime to live, we spoke only of our families, our friends, and especiallyof our desires and hopes for work still unfinished and future projects. Itook leave of him that day in awe of his mettle and courage in the faceof such adversity, and especially of the quiet fortitude of his belovedwife Bogusława and his two adoring daughters. I am richer today forhaving known, even for only a few years, Jan Kozik, a good personand a fine scholar.Lawrence D. OrtonOakland UniversityJAN KOZIK'SBIBLIOGRAPHYA.
