Histogram A histogram is a chart of the weighted grade average distribution for each class. It is developed at the end of each year for each class. This information allows a student to see their relative standing in the class. Rank in Class: ABRHS does not calculate rank in class. What Does It All Mean: Your unweighted GPA, weighted GPA and relative standing in the class (histogram), are some indicators of your academic performance while attending AB. This information is included in your student record and colleges and universities and even employers often use this information in making acceptance decisions. Subject to certain limitations, students may designate the portions of their student record that will be released. However, it is customary for the District to send (and colleges typically expect to receive) grading information, weighted GPA, unweighted GPA, and the chart of weighted grade average distribution in addition to other information. Of course, you should keep in mind that while a weighted GPA and histogram might be used instead of your unweighted GPA, colleges and universities use many other methods in making acceptance decisions. It is helpful to use your relative standing in the class in preparation for the college search and application process, but do not be overwhelmed by it. Please see your high school counselor if you have any questions about the above information. Grouping Students are placed in classes subject by subject at four levels: honors, accelerated/enriched, college preparatory or standard preparatory. Placement is based on the recommendations of teachers. Students and parents, however, have a voice in the grouping process whereby they can either refuse a higher ability level designation, or request consultation with a Department Leader to seek a higher level designation. Parents and students are encouraged to seriously consider the placement recommendation of the classroom teacher. The classroom teacher has the advantage of being able to compare the student’s ability and performance with that of other students. Experience has shown that when students are misplaced in ability levels, they often meet with frustration and/or stress. 9
Honors Level (H, H/AP) courses are recommended for students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement through a combination of ability and motivation. These courses contain considerable enrichment and acceleration. Teachers will assume that students are able to grasp concepts on initial presentation, and will, therefore, emphasize observation, analysis, synthesis and problem solving. There will be little practice or repetition within the classroom. Students are expected to be able to organize their time to plan long-term assignments, and to seek help when necessary, all on their own initiative. Accelerated/Enriched (AE) courses either move at a somewhat faster pace than our college preparatory courses and/or include some additional materials that expand on topics being covered. Therefore, more homework can be anticipated both in volume and in degree of difficulty. While these courses provide some practice and repetition in the classroom, it is assumed that students will be able to grasp material with only a moderate amount of teacher direction. Students are expected to show initiative in class discussions and in the approach to and completion of assignments. College Preparatory (CP) courses are designed to prepare students for success in college-level course work. Students in these courses have homework on a regular basis, and will be expected to plan and complete some long term assignments. A good deal of classroom time is devoted to reviewing concepts and problems encountered in the homework. Standard Preparatory (SP) courses provide an introduction to the subject. The pace is slower than our college preparatory program in order to provide for more reinforcement of the material presented. Homework assignments stress review much more than new applications. These courses are not college preparatory courses. Advanced Placement Programs Acton-Boxborough Regional High School currently offers Honors/Advanced Placement courses at the junior and senior class levels. The AP designation indicates that the program of study recommended by the College Board is incorporated into the course work. A student need not take the AP exam to enroll in this advanced level. 10
