LATIN III Latin Literature 508 (H)
Grades 9-12 Grouping: heterogeneous
Prerequisite: C or higher in Latin II Honors or at the discretion of the department
head in consultation with the teacher.
This course is a survey of Latin Literature.
Materials read will be selected works of Caesar, Ovid, Catullus, Cicero and Pliny,
all in the original Latin. Emphasis will focus on reading comprehension and
reading fluency, handling site passages, recognition of figures of speech,
understanding of the literary and historical context of the literature, recognition
of themes, and meter and scansion. Students will work from the second and
third year books of the Jenney Series, as well as supplementary texts. Students
will also take the National Latin Exam offered in March.
Full year course, 5 times per week, 5 credits
LATIN IV 524 (AE)
Grades 9-12 Grouping: heterogeneous
Prerequisite: C- or higher in Latin III AE or at the discretion of the department
head in consultation with the teacher.
This course will cover selected readings from Vergil’s Aeneid in the original
Latin, at a moderate pace. There will be significant further readings (in English),
as well as projects assigned throughout the year on related topics. Emphasis will
focus on reading comprehension and reading fluency, handling of site passages,
recognition of figures of speech, understanding historical and literary context of
the readings, recognition of themes, and meter and scansion. Students will use
the fourth book in the Jenney Series as well as supplementary sources to aid in
translation. Students will take the National Latin Exam offered in March.

LATIN IV Vergil/CAESAR 525 ( H / AP)
Grades 9-12 Grouping: heterogeneous
Prerequisite: C or higher in Latin III H/AP or at the discretion of the department
head in consultation with the teacher.
This course will cover readings required for the AP Exam offered in May.
Materials required will be selected passages (totaling approx. 1800 lines) from
Vergil’s Aeneid and Caesar’s DeBello Gallico, all in the original Latin. There will
be significant further readings (in English), i.e. Book VI in its entirety, throughout
the year. Emphasis will focus on reading comprehension and reading fluency,
