ART HISTORY: FROM IMPRESSIONISM TO TODAY 854 Grades: 9-12 Grouping: Heterogeneous Prerequisite: None Have you ever wanted to know about the life and art of artists like Monet, Cassatt, Van Gogh, Picasso, Dali, Pollock, and Warhol? This course will examine art making from the beginnings of Impressionism through to the present day. Using slides, discussions, DVDs, hands-on assignments and a field trip to a major museum, students will be introduced to the lives and work of the greatest artists of the modern era. Semester course, 5 times per week, 2.5 credits STUDIO ASSISTANT 844, 845, 846, 847 Grade: 12 Grouping: Heterogeneous Prerequisite: Art Faculty recommendation A studio assistantship in art provides a grade 12 student, with appropriate background and interest, the opportunity for on-the-job experience. The student will assist with material preparation and in-class instruction. The student must have experience in the subject matter. Studio Assistant is available in the following courses: . ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING - English Credit Grades: 9-12 Grouping: Homogeneous Prerequisite: Recommendation of ELL teacher The ELL classes provide beginner-early intermediate (ELL1 1) and intermediatetransitioning (ELL 2/3) English instruction to students who are learning English. The curriculum focuses on the proficiency of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The goals of the program include instruction crafted to ease entry into the mainstream English classes by mastering grammar, vocabulary, structured writing and reading comprehension by using the state guidelines for English Language Proficiency benchmarks. The American History class is crafted to follow the Massachusetts U.S. History I benchmarks while using an adapted ELL textbook and supplemental material. Additionally, the students are given support with assignments from their academic classes in the Academic Support Center. They also have the opportunity to take some of their tests in the room. Full year course, every day, 5 credits ELL I 911 ELL II – 946 ELL American History – 944 ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER Grades: 9-12 913 - ASC Prerequisite: Due to class size restrictions, ASC may require instructor approval. Grouping: Heterogeneous Scheduling: ASC students attend the program either daily or on alternate days. Typically, The Academic Support Center provides students with extra help on class work and reinforcement of course content. Developing good study skills and work habits are taught in conjunction with assigned work. Periodic consultations with classroom teachers and school counselors comprise an important part of the program. 914 - Peer Tutoring. Peer Tutors attend on alternate days and can receive community service credit when they assist students on a regular basis. Peer tutors work one on one and in small groups of student to assist with instruction, work completion, and organizational skills. Selection of peer tutors is made by application in the spring term and requires a teacher recommendation and student essay. Training of Peer Tutors takes place throughout the year under the supervision of the director of alternative programs and the ASC coordinator. 92
