Susie was born on May 9, 1876 in Hays County, Texas.After receiving a teacher’s certificate, Susie taught in a one room school at BluffSprings, Texas. Her salary for this job was twenty-nine dollars per month. Afterteaching at this one room school and two others, Susie attended San MarcosState Normal for one year where she received another teaching certificate. Afterteaching near Grimes, Oklahoma, Susie moved back to Hays County and continuedto teach there. Susie Brooks first married Will Mays. Susie married a secondtime to William Caleb Danforth (born on April 12, 1875). From 1912 to1914, William and Susie Danforth lived in San Marcos, Texas, Oklahoma andWimberley, Texas. William and Susie Danforth were the parents of three children:............Bessie Lee Danforth (3.4.7.1), b. September 20, 1909, San Marcos, Texas............Lily Mae Danforth, b. September 14, 1911, Dripping Springs, Texas............Vivian Danforth (3.4.7.3), b. May 23, 1913, Grimes, OklahomaWilliam Danforth carried mail from Wimberley to San Marcos and then back sixdays each week. Susie taught at Jacob’s Well and was the principal at theWimberley School, the Grimes, Oklahoma School and then the Sunny PointSchool. William and Susie Danforth moved to Carter, Oklahoma and thenmoved back to Wimberley and then lived in the Texas counties of Milam,Guadalupe and Caldwell. In 1920, Will and Sue Danforth were living RogerMills County, Oklahoma. In 1930, Will and Sue Danforth were living in SanMarcos, Hays County, Texas. In 1932, Susie received a Bachelor of Arts degree.William Danforth died on April 6, 1938 in Wimberley, Texas. Much ofthis book was based on a 1946 manuscript written by Susie Danforth and a moredetailed description of her manuscript may be found in the introduction to thisbook. In 1963, the book “Wimberley Legacy” was published containing severalarticles written by Susie Danforth. In 1976, at the age of 100 years, SusieDanforth was the author of the book “One Hundred Years in Wimberley.” Susie(Brooks) Danforth died on March 8, 1979 and was buried in the WimberleyCemetery.Lily Danforth received Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from SouthwestTexas State Teacher’s College in San Marcos, Texas and taught school fortwelve years. In 1942, Lily Danforth married James Noel Duce. Lily was a privatesecretary for Major Blaine at Camp Hulen, Texas and was a Junior Hostessat the Army Entertainment Center at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. She was alsoa private secretary for Major Daughty at the San Marcos Army Air Field in SanMarcos, Texas. Lily was involved in a car accident in September of 1940. Lily
