For example, the exchange-correlation functionals used in DFT approachesmust be generalized to treat actinides and transition metals and oxides with highly localized dand f electrons in their valence shells. Existing DFT approaches which include electron exchangein a self-consistent way (e.g., exact exchange, Self Interaction Correction (SIC), LDA+U)(Kudin et al. 2002; Kulik et al. 2006) provide at least semi-quantitative accuracy and relativelyhigh efficiency. An example of the effect of exchange on electron localization in a mineralBasic Research Needs for Geosciences: Facilitating 21 st Century Energy Systems 71
