In 1978, it wasmodified to become the motion-basedportion of the Shuttle Motion Simulator(SMS).• Eligible under NRHP Criterion A as apremier NASA facility for preparingastronauts for Space Shuttle missions,including launch and landing situations,and critical on-orbit operations.• Eligible under Criterion C. Thesimulators, which provide realisticsensory feedback to the astronauts, wereuniquely designed to replicate the Shuttlevehicle and its launch, orbit, and landingenvironments.Systems Integration Facility (Building 9) at JSCCrew Compartment Trainer I in Building 9N,looking southwest.(Source: Archaeological Consultants, Inc., 2006)• Built between 1965 and 1967; additionsmade in 1975, 1988 and 1992.• Wing N houses the Space VehicleMockup Facility (SVMF) which containsthree large Space Shuttle mockups, eachbuilt at full scale, and each of which ismulti-functional in support of astronauttraining and certification, flight controltraining, and engineering evaluation.• Eligible under NRHP Criteria A and C.Building 9 derives its exceptionalsignificance from the SVMF whichcontains unique tools which provideastronauts with more “real” trainingexperiences not found anywhere else.Astronaut testing has resulted inimportant improvements to the orbitervehicle design.July 2008Archaeological Consultants, Inc.
