Essential components of the SRBs,the parachutes deploy sequentially to slow the fall of the SRBs, thusfacilitating space flight recovery efforts and subsequent reuse of the SRBs.M7-777 Canister Rotation Facility The CRF was designed and built exclusively to provide for the horizontal and No(CRF)vertical rotation of the Payload Canister in support of the SSP. It madepossible a more efficient performance of this operation, previously conductedin the VAB.n/a Payload Canisters (2) The two Payload Canisters are environmentally-controlled cargo containersNoused to transport fully-integrated Shuttle payloads from various processing orassembly facilities to the launch pad. They were uniquely designed andconstructed to match the orbiter cargo bay, and embody the distinctive methodof for the transportation of payloads in support of the SSP.n/an/an/aRetrieval Ships Liberty Starand Freedom StarMobile Launcher Platforms(3) (MLP)Shuttle Landing Facility(SLF) RunwayJ6-2313 Landing Aids ControlBuilding (LACB)The two retrieval vessels were designed and constructed specifically for thetask of SRB recovery, thus facilitating space flight recovery efforts andsubsequent reuse of the SRBs, an essential component of the Space Shuttlevehicle. Also, since 1998 have been used to transport ETs from the MAF toKSC.The three MLPs are of exceptional importance for their unique function insupporting build-up of the Shuttle vehicle in the VAB and its transport to thelaunch pad. They are also distinguished by their design and engineering.The SLF Runway was built in 1976 for the SSP. Since 1981, it is NASA’sprimary landing site for the SSP. It is also significant as a practice facility forthe astronauts. One of the world’s longest runways, it is distinguished by itsdesign and construction.As the control center for flight operations which support the landing of theShuttle orbiter, this facility is an exceptionally significant component in theSSP. It plays a key role in the Orbiter’s safe return to Earth.J6-2262 Mate-Demate Device (MDD) The KSC MDD is one of only three extant devices used to attach and detachthe Shuttle orbiter and the SCA. It was used to detach the Enterprise and allfive operational orbiters upon their delivery from the assembly plant inPalmdale, and is also used for ferry flights between KSC and Palmdale formaintenance and modifications. It is also distinguished by its design andconstruction.K6-894 Orbiter Processing Facility(OPF)The OPF is one of two structures at KSC built exclusively for Shuttle orbiterpre-flight and post-landing processing. Each orbiter was processed for its firstoperational flight in this facility. The structural components of this(OPF-3)building, including work platforms, were specifically designed and engineeredto be compatible with the orbiter’s access points. The Space Shuttle MainEngine Processing Facility (SSMEPF) within this building is alsodistinguished as a one-of-a-kind facility designed specifically for the SSME.K6-794 Thermal Protection System The TPSF is significant as one of only two NASA-owned assets constructedNoFacility (TPSF)exclusively to house the manufacture and repair of the Shuttle’s thermalprotection and thermal control systems, essential to the success of the SSP.K6-494 Rotation/Processing Building The Rotation/Processing Building was specifically designed for the purpose of Norotating the SRB segments, an operation vital to the preparation of the launchvehicle for its missionL6-247 SRB Assembly andRefurbishment (ARF)Manufacturing BuildingM7-961 Hypergol Module Processing(North)1257,1257N/S,1258, 1258A,1261, 1262Aircraft Landing DynamicsFacility (Track, CarriageArresting System, CommandCenter, Propulsion Center,Calibration Building, MainSupport Building)As a manufacturing, processing, and assembly facility for SRB non-motorcomponents, the Manufacturing Building plays a vital role in preparing theShuttle vehicle for flight.This one-of-a-kind facility is used for the checkout, refurbishment andrevalidation of the hypergolic fuel modules of the orbital maneuvering system(OMS) pods, with the incorporated reaction control system (RCS).LANGLEY RESEARCH CENTER (LaRC), VA.This facility was used since 1985 to test Shuttle tire performance, tire failurewheel tests, and the effects of runway modifications. It is the only facility inthe world that could provide Space Shuttle braking and landing tests requiredfor the Shuttle development program. It is also distinguished by its design andconstruction.MARSHALL SPACE FLIGHT CENTER (MSFC), AL4436 SSME Hardware SimulationLaboratory (HSL) Block IIFacilityUnique facility responsible for both hardware and software design anddevelopment, real time launch support, and quality assurance of the computersoftware that controls the main engines for all Space Shuttle flights.4540 Test Facility 116 Test Facility 116 derives its primary importance for its role in thedevelopment of propulsion systems for the Space Shuttle. It is uniquelydesigned and engineered to support acoustic model testing for the Shuttle.4550 Structural Dynamic TestFacility4583 Test and Data RecordingFacility (TF 115)Built in 1964 and modified in 1975 to support the SSP, this NHL isdistinguished by its unique capability to dynamically test the Space Shuttle. Itis historically associated with the Mated Vertical Ground Vibration Test(MVGVT) program of 1978-79 which served to verify that the Shuttle couldwithstand the forces encountered during powered flight. It is alsodistinguished by its unique design and engineering.This facility is significantly associated with scale model tests to improve theSRB following the Challenger accident of January 1986.
