Course DescriptionsDESL245 Heavy Duty Hydraulic Drive TrainsCredits: 3Prerequisites: DESL110, DESL111, and DESL122This course covers the fundamentals, operation, diagnosis, andrepair <strong>of</strong> hydrostatic and power shift transmissions, torqueconverters, and torque dividers that are related to heavy-duty,diesel-powered, on-and-<strong>of</strong>f-road equipment.DESL255 Heavy Duty Brakes and UndercarriageCredits: 7Prerequisites: DESL110 and DESL111This course covers the adjustment, maintenance, troubleshooting,and repair <strong>of</strong> heavy-duty air-actuated brakes, dual air systemvalves and circuits, heavy-duty ABS systems, and hydraulicassistedbrakes as used with on-and-<strong>of</strong>f-road diesel poweredequipment. This course also includes maintenance, adjustment,and repair <strong>of</strong> suspension systems as used with tandem axlediesel trucks and <strong>of</strong>f-road equipment. <strong>Student</strong>s will be exposedto alignment <strong>of</strong> solid I-beam front axles and 5th wheels as relatedto heavy-duty trucks.DESL265 Applied Lab ExperienceCredits: 8Prerequisites: 2 nd year standing or consent <strong>of</strong> instructorThis course builds upon the knowledge and skill attained inprevious courses. It is intended to match students with live,practical lab experiences involving subject matter previouslycovered in other courses. When provided with diesel poweredequipment in need <strong>of</strong> maintenance, service, inspection, or repair<strong>of</strong> any component or system that the student has had previousinstruction while in the program, the student will interact withthe customer/operator, generate the work order, and in a safe,efficient, and organized manner, set about to perform the properoperations needed to place equipment back into operation, andcomplete the documentation needed to close the work order.This will be accomplished to meet customer requests, industrystandards, and instructor’s satisfactory critique <strong>of</strong> studentperformance and productivity with available resources.DESL287 Independent StudyCredits: 1-3Prerequisites: Consent <strong>of</strong> instructor and approval <strong>of</strong> theDivision ChairThis course is designed to meet specific learning needs <strong>of</strong>students. Typically, such independent study projects focuson learning opportunities not otherwise <strong>of</strong>fered in our collegecurriculum. The student then initiates a proposal describing,among other things, the number <strong>of</strong> hours to be spent on thestudy project, specific learning outcomes, and how evaluationis to be accomplished. Theapproved proposal will have signatures <strong>of</strong> the student, FacultySponsor, Division Chair, and the Associate Dean.DESN101 Introduction to Interior DesignCredits: 3Prerequisites: noneDesign fundamentals as related to the study and practice <strong>of</strong>Interior Design. <strong>Student</strong>s will be introduced to the career <strong>of</strong>interior design, the design process, elements and principles<strong>of</strong> design, and design concept. Other topics include materials,lighting, human factors, space planning, environmental design,and health and safety design issues. Course will include lectures,media presentations, and class discussions.DESN110 Materials and the EnvironmentCredits: 3Prerequisites: DESN101Introduces textiles and various interior materials and sourcesthat would be selected, specified, installed, and maintained inan interior environment. In this course, studies will includeresearch and application <strong>of</strong> environmentally green products.<strong>Student</strong>s will research the “green” appropriateness <strong>of</strong> textiles,materials for flooring, walls, ceilings, upholstery, millwork, andcabinetry. The course introduces equipment, appliances, andhow to measure, specify, and understand correct installationmethods and product maintenance.DESN120 Beginning Space Planning and Design ConceptsCredits: 3Prerequisites: DESN101 and ARTZ105<strong>Student</strong>s will learn how to plan spaces with graphic tools andtechniques to communicate space planning and conceptualdesign through two-dimensional drawings, schematics, andthree-dimensional models.
