Course DescriptionsNRSG148 Leadership IssuesCredits: 2; 1 lecture, 1 (45 hrs.) clinicalPrerequisites: noneThis capstone course provides the Practical Nursing studentinformation regarding the current status <strong>of</strong> vocational nursing.This course assists the nursing student in bridging the rolebetween student and employee. Leadership/managementskills, healthcare delivery systems, continuing educationalneeds, licensure requirements, legal issues, and standards <strong>of</strong>practice are investigated. Personal and pr<strong>of</strong>essional identityand entry into the job market are explored. There is a fortyfivehour clinical/precepted component to provide the studentopportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in the long-termsetting.NRSG250 LPN to RN TransitionCredits: 3; 3 lecturePrerequisite: noneThis course will focus on the role transition from LPN to RNin relation to the concepts and principles <strong>of</strong> holistic nursingcare. Focus is on the continuing development <strong>of</strong> roles andresponsibilities <strong>of</strong> the RN as defined by the scope <strong>of</strong> practicestandards, nursing theory, and conceptual models.NRSG252 Complex Care Needs <strong>of</strong> Maternal/Child NursingCredits: 3; 2 lecture, 1 (45 hrs.) clinicalPrerequisite: Admission to the Associate <strong>of</strong> Science RegisteredNursing ProgramThis course presents concepts and principles related to theregistered nurse providing nursing care for childbearingfamilies and children who experience complex alterationsin the functional dimensions <strong>of</strong> health. Focus is on the use<strong>of</strong> the nursing process in assessment and application <strong>of</strong>advanced concepts in the care <strong>of</strong> the childbearing family, ora child with more complex health care problems from birththrough adolescence. The course will explore special needsand complications during the perinatal experience, and alteredfunctioning, special needs and disease processes manifested inchildren.NRSG254 Complex Care Needs <strong>of</strong> Mental Health NursingCredits: 2; 1 lecture, 1 (45 hrs.) clinicalPrerequisite: noneThis course explores physiological, psychological, sociocultural,spiritual, and environmental factors associated with MentalHealth/Illness affecting individuals and families across thelifespan. Focus will be placed on basic concepts <strong>of</strong> psychiatricnursing, therapeutic modalities, as well as psychiatric disordersincluding psychopharmacological management. Through theimplementation <strong>of</strong> the nursing process, students will formulatea plan <strong>of</strong> care for an individual who has been diagnosed andtreated for a mental illness.NRSG256 PathophysiologyCredits: 3; 3 lecturePrerequisite: noneThis course will introduce the student to the basic principles andprocesses <strong>of</strong> Pathophysiology including cellular communication,genes and genetic disease, forms <strong>of</strong> cellular injury, fluid andelectrolyte/acid base balance, immunity, stress coping andillness, and tumor biology. Pathophysiology <strong>of</strong> the mostcommon alterations according to body system will also bediscussed as well as the latest developments in research relatedto each area.NRSG262 Complex Care Needs-Adult ClientCredits: 4; 2 lecture, 2 (90 hrs.) clinicalPrerequisites: noneThis course prepares the student to provide nursing care to adultclients experiencing acutely changing conditions in settingswhere outcome is less predictable. Emphasis is placed on thenurse’s response to emergent/life-threatening/rapidly changingconditions. Topics covered include collaborative therapeuticmodalities related to acute/complex neurological, cardiac,respiratory, hematological, endocrinologic events, shock, sepsis/SIRS, complex burns, etc.NRSG265 Advanced Clinical SkillsCredits: 1; 1 (30 hrs) labPrerequisite: noneThis course prepares the student to carry out complex nursinginterventions across the lifespan. Topics covered includeIV therapies such as central venous therapy, parenteralnutrition, IV medication administration, complex IV infusions,blood/blood product administrations, advanced airway/ventilatory support, wound care, laboratory values, complexgastrointestinal problems, arrhythmia identification, mobilityissues, disaster preparedness, and palliative care.NRSG266 Managed Client CareCredits: 4; 2 lecture, 2 (90 hrs.) clinicalPrerequisite: noneThis course covers topics related to integrated nursing care<strong>of</strong> individual clients and groups <strong>of</strong> clients as well as basicprinciples related to leadership and management in nursing.Topics include effective communication techniques in theemployment setting; role differentiation among care providers;organization and prioritization; delegation, supervision,management <strong>of</strong> health care resources, legal and ethical issues,values clarification, conflict resolution, and consensus building.The course requires students to integrate knowledge and skillslearned from other nursing courses and help them transitionfrom the role <strong>of</strong> student to that <strong>of</strong> a Registered Nurse. Licensureexam (NCLEX-RN) preparation and process are also includedas a component <strong>of</strong> the course.
