Course DescriptionsDESN130 Residential StudioCredits: 3Prerequisites: A “C-” or higher in DESN101, DESN120, andDFT150<strong>Student</strong>s apply the problem-solving discipline <strong>of</strong> the designprocess and its application to residential design. <strong>Student</strong>sdevelop concepts to achieve design goals and apply technicalskills to their design solutions as they work on a variety <strong>of</strong>relevant interior design projects. <strong>Student</strong>s apply the problemsolvingdiscipline <strong>of</strong> the design process and its application toresidential design. <strong>Student</strong>s develop concepts to achieve designgoals and apply technical skills to their design solutions as theywork on a variety <strong>of</strong> relevant interior design projects. Thiscourse focuses on environmental “green” interior materialsand products that would be selected and specified in residentialspaces. Studio format with 5 hours contact weekly.DESN131 Residential Studio InternshipCredits: 1Co-requisites: DESN130Prerequisites: A “C-” or higher in ARTZ105, DESN101,DESN120, and DFT150In this course is for students who wish to only complete theone-year certificate. <strong>Student</strong>s will observe pr<strong>of</strong>essional designenvironments to develop an awareness <strong>of</strong> the responsibility torelationships in the workplace. <strong>Student</strong>s will complete a thirtyhour internship.DESN140 Public StudioCredits: 3Prerequisites: A “C-” or higher in DESN101 and DESN120;recommends DESN110 with a “C-” or better<strong>Student</strong>s apply the problem-solving discipline <strong>of</strong> the designprocess and its application to public design. <strong>Student</strong>sdevelop concepts to achieve design goals and apply technicalskills to their design solutions as they work on a variety <strong>of</strong>relevant interior design projects, which could include <strong>of</strong>fice,medical, and/or retail environments. This course focuses onenvironmental “green” interior materials and products thatwould be selected and specified in public studio. In this course,students will learn codes, regulations, and laws as they relate topublic interiors. Studio Format (6 hours <strong>of</strong> contact).DESN160 Lighting the EnvironmentCredits: 3Prerequisites: DESN101 and DFT150Introduces lighting design for interior environments. <strong>Student</strong>sexplore human visual perception, properties <strong>of</strong> natural andartificial light, lighting devices and controls, and visualcommunication <strong>of</strong> lighting designs. Discussion regardingenergy issues and selection <strong>of</strong> green products is throughoutthe course. The course includes application to specific designproblems.DESN220 History <strong>of</strong> Furniture and the ArtsCredits: 3Prerequisites: noneCourse surveys the historical relationship between Westerninterior architecture, furniture, and decorative arts fromantiquity to the 19th century. Style development will beemphasized as it relates to people, social conditions, andpolitical context. Lecture format with media presentations.DESN225 Modern Furniture and the ArtsCredits: 3Prerequisites: noneCourse surveys the interiors, furniture, and the decorativearts from the Victorian period to the present. Style developmentwill be emphasized as it relates to people, social conditions,political context, and technology. A portion <strong>of</strong> this course focuses on environmental“green” interior materials and products that would be selectedand specified in a corporate studio. In this course, studentswill learn codes, regulations, and laws as they relate to <strong>of</strong>ficeinteriors. <strong>Student</strong>s will develop appropriate working drawingsfor an <strong>of</strong>fice space. In this course, students will learn to design withmaterials and methods that support green building concepts.Studio Format (6 hours <strong>of</strong> contact).DESN245 Pr<strong>of</strong>essional PracticesCredits: 3Prerequisites: Successful completion <strong>of</strong> at least the first year<strong>of</strong> the program.Introduces the concept <strong>of</strong> the business and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalmanagement <strong>of</strong> an interior design practice. Topics includeresume writing, marketing skills, and creation <strong>of</strong> a portfolio.<strong>Student</strong>s learn about working with showrooms, personnel in adesign firm, and clients.
