<strong>Student</strong> Information<strong>Student</strong> Support ServicesAdvising and Academic AssistanceThe Advising, Learning, and Career Center (ALCC), locatedin Donaldson Campus Room 139, provides academic andpersonal support to enable students to succeed in college. Thecenter provides placement testing, advising, and academicsupport. Academic advising available in the center includesinitial and ongoing academic advising, transfer information,career planning, and academic success strategies. The Career Services Coordinatorprovides workshops and individual counseling assistingstudents with exploring career choices, resume writing, andinterviewing. The emphasis is on clarifying choices,handling difficult situations, and accessing communityresources. Appointments with a licensed counselor can bemade through the Office <strong>of</strong> Disability and Veterans Serviceslocated in Donaldson Campus Room 119.Disability ServicesServices for students with disabilities are providedat UM-<strong>Helena</strong> under the guidelines <strong>of</strong> Section 504 <strong>of</strong>the Rehabilitation Act <strong>of</strong> 1973 and the Americans withDisabilities Act <strong>of</strong> 1990. Access to the <strong>College</strong>’s programsand facilities is provided for all qualified students, anddiscrimination based on disability against any student isspecifically prohibited under these laws. Services are housedin the Office <strong>of</strong> Disabilty and Veterans Services on theDonaldson Campus, and students are encouraged to contactthe Director <strong>of</strong> Disability Services as early as possible toplan for possible accommodations. Academic InformationAcademic IntegrityThe University <strong>of</strong> Montana - <strong>Helena</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>expects its students to adhere to a high standard <strong>of</strong> academicintegrity. It is a violation <strong>of</strong> academic integrity to presentthe ideas, designs, or works <strong>of</strong> another person as one’s ownefforts or to permit another person to do so. The followingguidelines are intended to clarify these issues for students,faculty, and administration.The <strong>College</strong> will regard the following acts as violations <strong>of</strong>academic integrity constituting academic dishonesty:Plagiarism - A student will be considered in violation <strong>of</strong>academic integrity if he or she submits an assignment,whether written, oral, graphic, or computer-generated, whichconsists wholly or partially <strong>of</strong> the words, work, or ideas <strong>of</strong>another individual without giving the original author propercredit.Copying - A student will be considered in violation <strong>of</strong>academic integrity if he or she uses crib notes, cheat sheets,books, or any other material or electronic device as aidsin an examination or any other graded exercise, unlessthe instructor <strong>of</strong> the class has given permission to usesuch materials. Collaboration with another student on anexamination or other graded exercise, unless the instructorhas given permission, also constitutes copying.Contributing to Academic Dishonesty - A student willbe considered in violation <strong>of</strong> academic integrity if he orshe willfully assists another student in an act <strong>of</strong> academicdishonesty.Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Academicsanctions for a first violation are at the discretion <strong>of</strong> theinstructor and range from a failing grade for the particularinstance to a failing grade in the course in which academicdishonesty occurs. When a faculty member assigns a failingcourse grade on the basis <strong>of</strong> academic dishonesty, he or sheshall assign a grade <strong>of</strong> “FX.” The student may petition theRegistrar’s Office by letter to remove only the “X” portion <strong>of</strong>the grade after successfully completing an Ethics course witha grade <strong>of</strong> “B” or better from any accredited college withinthree academic years <strong>of</strong> the original failure. Retaking thefailed course does not remove the “F” or “FX” designationfrom the transcript. A student may not represent the <strong>College</strong>in any <strong>of</strong>ficial manner nor hold a student government <strong>of</strong>ficewith an “FX” grade.Faculty must report all violations <strong>of</strong> academic integrity tothe student involved, the appropriate Department Chair(s),and to the Associate Dean/Academic Affairs; in cases <strong>of</strong>repeated <strong>of</strong>fenses, the Associate Dean/Academic Affairswill recommend disciplinary sanctions that may result inexpulsion from the <strong>College</strong>. <strong>Student</strong>s retain their right todue process and may refer to the <strong>Student</strong> Handbook or theAssistant Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>Student</strong> Services regarding any academicor disciplinary sanctions.Associate <strong>of</strong> Applied Science DegreeThe University <strong>of</strong> Montana - <strong>Helena</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><strong>of</strong>fers the Associate <strong>of</strong> Applied Science (A.A.S.) degreein Accounting <strong>Technology</strong>, Automotive <strong>Technology</strong>,Aviation Maintenance <strong>Technology</strong>, Computer <strong>Technology</strong>,Construction <strong>Technology</strong>, Diesel <strong>Technology</strong>, Electronics<strong>Technology</strong>, Fire and Rescue, Metals <strong>Technology</strong>, Nursing,Office <strong>Technology</strong>, Water Resources, and Welding<strong>Technology</strong>. The A.A.S. degree is awarded to any studentsatisfactorily completing a program as established by the<strong>College</strong>. The A.A.S. degree is not designed for transfer;however, graduates may be accepted into baccalaureateprograms <strong>of</strong>fered at several four-year institutions. A passinggrade <strong>of</strong> “C-“ or better in required courses and a 2.0 (2.5 forNursing) minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA)are required for a degree to be awarded. Courses numberedbelow 100 are not applied toward program completionrequirements. <strong>Student</strong>s seeking more than one programmust inform the Registrar’s Office and/or the Financial AidOffice. <strong>Student</strong>s will be required to use the catalog in useat the time the program is declared unless a Request toGraduate from Alternate Catalog form is completed andapproved. <strong>Student</strong>s entering after a one-semester time lapse(excluding summer) or longer will re-enroll under the currentcatalog.Associate <strong>of</strong> Arts and Associate <strong>of</strong> Science DegreesThe general Associate <strong>of</strong> Arts (A.A.) and the Associate <strong>of</strong>Science (A.S.) degrees are general transfer degrees, indicatingthe student has completed a course <strong>of</strong> study equivalent tothe first two years toward a bachelor’s degree. This degreedoes not <strong>of</strong>ficially include a major or minor course <strong>of</strong> study;however, the student must select one <strong>of</strong> several options. Thestudent must meet the requirements as outlined under theProgram Offerings section <strong>of</strong> this catalog to receive the A.A.or A.S. degree. The student must earn a minimum grade<strong>of</strong> “C-” in each course and maintain a 2.25 (2.5 for Nursing)cumulative GPA in the degree program for a degree to beawarded. Courses numbered below 100 are not appliedtoward program completion requirements. <strong>Student</strong>s will berequired to use the catalog in use at the time the programis declared unless a Request to Graduate from AlternateCatalog form is completed and approved. <strong>Student</strong>s enteringafter a one-semester time lapse (excluding summer) or longerwill re-enroll under the current catalog.The UM-<strong>Helena</strong> general education core transfers as a unitand satisfies the lower division component <strong>of</strong> the generaleducation requirements at all institutions <strong>of</strong> the MontanaUniversity System.The Registered Nursing Program is a two-semester associatedegree program that prepares graduates to function asmembers and leaders <strong>of</strong> the health care teams in varioushealth care environments. A current, unencumbered LPNlicense is required.
