On the Chronology of Óláfr Tryggvasonand Volodimer the Great:The Saga's Relative Chronology as a Historical SourceOMELJAN PRITSAKIn memory of my dear Scandinavian friendsAgnete Loth and Jón HelgasonI.I.Óláfr Tryggvason played an exceptional role in Norwegian history as theruler who introduced Christianity in his land, yet he has never been the subjectof a monograph by modern historians, Norwegian or foreign. 1 Even thedate of his birth has remained a controversial question 2 for which, it seems,scholars have lost hope of finding a definite answer.The situation, fortunately, is not that bleak. Óláfr Tryggvason was highlyrespected by Icelanders—for centuries the guardians of the Old Norwegianpast—because they regarded him as their baptizer. At least four completesagas devoted to him have come down to us. Although their information isoften repetitious, they do at times complement each other.
