Sport development pathways are a key way to foster the community’s continuedengagement with sport. They can help retain a player’s interest and enjoyment insport, leading to continued participation. The provision of various levels ofcompetition in each sport allows participants to further develop their skills andcreates pathways.Council’s vision for Brimbank is that it will be ‘a diverse, active and connectedcommunity living in sustainable, well-designed, safe and accessible local areas withhigh participation in community life’. The Council Plan (2011-2015) reinforcesCouncil’s commitment to:…growing strong pride for residents and visitors by creating an urban environmentthat is attractive, clean and green and which improves living, business andrecreational opportunities, demonstrates environmental leadership and fosters asustainable community.Providing the community with access to inclusive, well developed sports facilitiesand pathways plays a key role in achieving this commitment. This provision isunderpinned by the following key principles, which will guide the future provision ofsports facilities in Brimbank.ParticipationThis plan and Council’s future provision of sports facilities in Brimbank isunderpinned by a desire to encourage the participation in sports for the overallhealth and wellbeing of the entire Brimbank community.Community developmentCouncil aims to promote community growth and development by providing placesfor people to gather and participate in a range of sporting activities to encourageparticipation in physical activity and foster social interaction.AffordabilityIt is important to ensure that sports facilities and activities are affordable so that allsections of the community can afford to participate in sporting activities.AccessibilityAll new and upgraded sports facilities must be accessible to people of all abilities,with a particular focus on access for people with disabilities.SPORTS FACILITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN10
Equitable usageFuture developments must ensure sports facilities are equitably distributed acrossthe City. This will guarantee fair and equitable access to Brimbank sports facilitiesfor all groups within the community. A focus on creating an equitable distribution ofsports facilities and developing physical linkages between them must bemaintained.FlexibilityBy ensuring that future sporting facilities are, where appropriate, flexibly designed,they will be able to be used by a range of community groups and for a variety ofactivities.SustainabilityEnvironmental and financial sustainability is a key consideration for any and allfuture developments.
