4Communityand district profilesAs stated, it is a primary aim of this plan to facilitate the provision of adequatesports facilities for the improvement of the overall health and wellbeing of theBrimbank community. As such, community interests, needs and aspirations, actualparticipation trends, and demographic characteristics have guided the developmentof this plan, and should inform future sports facility development decisions.BrimbankThe City of Brimbank (Brimbank) is Melbourne’s second most populousmunicipality. It has five districts or local planning areas, each containing a towncentre and network of smaller urban villages. Brimbank comprises 25 suburbs, fourof which extend into neighbouring municipalities. Its estimated population in 2011was 190,962.(REFER TO FIGURE 1 – MAP OF BRIMBANK DISTRICTS).Brimbank has a significantly higher proportion of residents aged less than 25 years(34.9%) and a lower proportion of residents aged 55+ (17.7%) than Victoria(18.7% and 24.5% respectively).In 2006, the most populous age group in Brimbank was 20–24 year olds, with13,976 persons. In 2021, the most populous forecast age group will be 25–29 yearolds, with 14,555 persons.Future increases of residents aged 5–11 years are expected to be largely confinedto the southern part of Brimbank, with populations of primary school age childrenexpected to peak in around 2022, and then stabilise and decline slightly until 2031.Unlike other age groups, residents aged 75+ are expected to increase by 2031 inevery district and every suburb with the exception of Ardeer.This is relevant in terms of planning for the provision of outdoor sporting facilitiesbecause the age groups most likely to be involved in outdoor, team-based sportsare those ranging from primary school age through to 30 years.SPORTS FACILITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN18
Brimbank’s population is projected to increase slightly over the next ten years witha projected population of 201,726.
