Prevalence of obesity in BrimbankAccording to the Victoria Health Survey (2008), 40.0% of males and 22.9% offemales in Brimbank are overweight and 23.3% of males and 18.4% of females areobese. These proportions are similar to those for Victorian males and females(39.9% and 24.2% respectively for overweight and 17.3% and 16.1% respectivelyfor obesity).ImplicationsPhysical exercise is important in disease prevention.Physical inactivity is an important contributor to other health risk factors such asobesity, high cholesterol and hypertension.AIHW 2010BSports facility provision provides opportunities for the community to participate inboth informal and formal sports activities and enables the community to becomemore active and lead healthier lives.Currently, 33% of Brimbank residents are reported to be participating in organisedsport compared to the Melbourne average of almost 50% (Community Profile ID2011). Given the comparative poor health of Brimbank residents and their lowparticipation rate in sport, it is important that Council ensures there is sufficientprovision of sporting facilities across the City for residents to access sports clubsand sporting programs. It is also important that there is an opportunity for the community to participate ininformal sporting activities by providing sports facilities that allow for unorganisedsports participation such as casual and social games.SPORTS FACILITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN32
