Social Justice Charter(2009: currently under review)The Social Justice Charter was launched in response to high levels of socioeconomicdisadvantage in the municipality and to promote Council’s social justicecommitments to plan, lead, and advocate on behalf of all the community.The Social Justice Charter aims to position Council as a ‘social justice Council’.The Charter commits Council to reducing the factors that influence disadvantageincluding: poverty, cultural and linguistic diversity, recognition of Indigenouspeoples, gender, disability, unemployment, housing, access to services, and socialexclusion.The Charter aims to promote active civic engagement, strengthen communitywellbeing, and reduce the fundamental causes of structural disadvantage. Inparticular, the Charter acknowledges that inequality will persist unless governmentscombine their policy commitments and service responses with the efforts ofcommunity agencies and local groups. With this in mind, the implementation of theSocial Justice Charter has especially focused on the value of collaborativerelationships, multi-agency partnerships; and an integrated response across theCouncil Departments.The Social Justice Charter is currently being reviewed and updated by Council.SPORTS FACILITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN14
3Progress to dateCouncil has already made considerable progress in dealing with the challengesinvolved in the provision of sport and recreation facilities in Brimbank over the lastten years.
