Strategy 2.9: Rugby<strong>Brimbank</strong> has only one rugby group, transitioning to a club. There are also clubslocated close by in Footscray, Melton and Hoppers Crossing. In recent times, therehas been an increase in Pacific Islanders moving into the southern districts of themunicipality. Groups of islanders are meeting informally at local recreationalreserves to play social rugby games. In time, these groups may form a senior cluband ask <strong>Council</strong> for a competition venue.Priority actions<strong>Council</strong> has been approached to establish a junior rugby club and is working withthis group to support the development of the club.Strategy 2.<strong>10</strong>: BowlsThere are currently five bowls clubs within <strong>Brimbank</strong>, three which are privatelyowned. The two clubs operating on <strong>Council</strong> landuse a atotal of four bowling greens.Bowls Victoria reports a decline in membership in the Western Region over recent<strong>years</strong>. It is noted that clubs in other parts of Melbourne have significantly increasedthe usage of greens through casual use. This is an area that requires work in<strong>Brimbank</strong>, however there is no identified need for additional bowling facilities in<strong>Brimbank</strong>.Priority actionsNone required.Strategy 2.11: BadmintonThe popularity of badminton has increased significantly across the State in recent<strong>years</strong> with the number of clubs increasing from 20 to 49 since 2005. There are noregistered badminton teams or dedicated badminton facilities in <strong>Brimbank</strong>.Badminton can be played by people of all ages and abilities and is particularlypopular with the Asian communities.Priority actions<strong>Council</strong> will need to give consideration to providing opportunities for badminton.This requires strategies as outlined in Section 5.SPORTS FACILITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN60
