Strategy 2.14: VolleyballVolleyball is a low profile sport in Victoria. It is slowly increasing in participation,particularly in junior competitions. Globally, volleyball is a very popular sport,particularly in Europe and Asia. Volleyball Victoria claims that volleyball is thesecond most popular sport in the world, after soccer.There are at least six small volleyball competitions (traditional and beach) runningin the Western Suburbs. The traditional competitions are held at the Werribee Sportand Fitness Centre, RecWest in Braybrook and the Footscray YMCA. Beachvolleyball is held at the Westgate Recreation Centre and Action Indoor SportsCentre in Footscray. There are no competitions in Brimbank.Priority actionsCouncil will give consideration to providing facilities for volleyball when planningnew or redeveloping existing indoor recreation facilities, if community interest inthis sport grows.SPORTS FACILITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN62
7Facility developmentAs discussed throughout this Plan, Council will work to address the identified gapsin the provision of sporting facilities across the City in a range of ways. Theseinclude optimising the use of existing facilities, developing additional facilities atexisting sporting reserves in addition to developing new sports facilities andinvestigating opportunities to enter into partnership agreements with local schools,local organisations and neighbouring municipalities.As part of the decision making process for developing sport and recreation facilities,a matrix has been developed and will be used to assess new or planned sportsfacility development projects. This enables Council to effectively prioritise projects,ensuring that all sport and recreation facilities are assessed consistently, and aredetermined in a fair and equitable manner.The matrix will be used to inform Council on future funding submissions and annualbudget planning.The Facility Development Matrix assesses each proposed project against set criteriawith associated scores as set out below.
