6.2.6. DMPM – general awareness raising on the contribution that coralreef ecosystems make to tourism, fisheries management andmarine conservationAn awareness raising programme is required for relevant governmentagencies(including DMPM) at the federal, state and local levels, on coralreef ecosystem functions, and their importance to the country from manyperspectives including tourism, fisheries, and marine conservation.6.2.7. <strong>NRE</strong>/SSC/DOE – integrated approach to terrestrial and marineprotected area managementThe relevant government agencies at federal, state and local levels shouldbe encouraged to share and collaborate on the ecosystem based approachto protected area management (both terrestrial and marine) building fromthe relationships that provide a foundation for this integration.6.2.8. NSC and SSC – expand membership to include the voice of thecommunitiesThe NSC and SSC membership should include representation of the CCC’sof each project site, to ensure the local voice is heard at the federal andstate level and to increase their ownership of the MP communityconsultation management approach. This would also provide a check andbalance at the NSC and SSC levels and provide a platform for the sharingand exchange of knowledge.6.2.9. <strong>NRE</strong> – provide some targeted support to help the project achieveits objectivesThe resources of <strong>NRE</strong> should be utilised to support this project and expand<strong>NRE</strong>’s understanding of the community based approach. eg Communicationplan development and outreach activities could be supported by <strong>NRE</strong>agencies e.g. CEMD (Communications, Education and Media Dept).6.2.10. DMPM – integrate the project fully into the departmentThe DMPM be asked to fully integrate the project within the DMPM through• The Secretary General be asked to encourage and activelypromote the project’s approach within the DMPM• The Division Directors of DMPM be asked to monitor the sevenoutcomes of the project• The PMU staff be clearly identified as DMPM staff and beintegrated into the DMPM as soon as practicable and before theconclusion of the project and to deepen ownership of the projectoutcomes39
