Site 4: Chasma area, east of Valles Mar<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>eris<br />

This area is <strong>on</strong>e of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> deepest chaotic z<strong>on</strong>es <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> equatorial belt of <strong>Mars</strong>. It is quite complex and<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>cludes some attractive z<strong>on</strong>es such as Capri Chasma and Gangis Chasma. Moreover, it is dom<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ated by<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> channel Chaos Complex that c<strong>on</strong>nects Valles Mar<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>eris to Hydroates Chaos. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> area c<strong>on</strong>sists of<br />

typical chaotic features suggest<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> presence of mass-wast<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g material that is supposed to represent<br />

rocks from a large time span judg<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> elevati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> surround<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g cliffs. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> outflow channel<br />

would provide debris from remote areas as far as Valles Mar<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>eris. From this po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t of view, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> land<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

site is remarkable <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possibility <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> analys<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g rock samples from different geological units. Moreover,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bas<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s depth and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possible lacustr<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e deposits of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Hydroates Chaos (Mosang<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>i &<br />

Ori, 1996) suggest <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possibility that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area has been affected by stand<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g bodies of water.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> exobiology potential is not as high as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r land<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g sites but <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possibility of collect<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g a variety<br />

of lithologies, plus <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possible presence of lacustr<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e deposits, make this an <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>terest<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g site.<br />
