TEAM II<br />
To study specifically <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chemical analysis aspects of an exobiology multi-user<br />
package. This <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>cludes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chemical analysis of surface and subsurface m<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>erals and<br />
organics, to search <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> microbial life, past or present, <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Martian soil.<br />

In this volume, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> three separate c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se Teams are <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>troduced<br />
sequentially. From <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Exobiology</str<strong>on</strong>g> Science Team drew up c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
desired strategy <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> searches and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> set of sample acquisiti<strong>on</strong>, observati<strong>on</strong> and<br />
analysis <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>strumentati<strong>on</strong> to fulfil <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scientific requirements. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s were<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n adapted so that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> result<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g exobiology package and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> operati<strong>on</strong>al strategies<br />
are reas<strong>on</strong>ably c<strong>on</strong>sistent with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> major c<strong>on</strong>stra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts of potential future <strong>Mars</strong> lander<br />
missi<strong>on</strong>s. That has been achieved without a major loss of scientific potential.<br />
Later, ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r subgroup (Team IV) embarked up<strong>on</strong> an analysis, from an exobiology<br />
viewpo<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t, of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential value of human explorati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>Mars</strong>. Its<br />
c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s and recommendati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> this critical subject are presented <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Annex 1.<br />
