vidual compounds is such that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> simplest <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> terms of structure are most abundant.<br />

This implies an abiogenic orig<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>, i.e. built up from s<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gle carb<strong>on</strong> atoms. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> same<br />

dicarboxylic acids (Yuen & Kvenvolden, 1973) and polyaromatic hydrocarb<strong>on</strong>s. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

above <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>terpretati<strong>on</strong> is c<strong>on</strong>firmed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestigati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> isotopic compositi<strong>on</strong> of<br />

homologous series (Yuen et al., 1984; Gilmour & Pill<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ger, 1994), where isotope<br />

fracti<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> effects are <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> keep<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> greater strength of 12 C- 13 C b<strong>on</strong>ds as might<br />

be expected if <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> compound were c<strong>on</strong>structed from simple precursors by a cha<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

process. Biosyn<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>sis, while produc<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g isotopic differences between<br />

oxidised and reduced carb<strong>on</strong>, does not seem to show regular fracti<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> between<br />

small and large homologues.<br />

Although <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> orig<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>al breakthrough <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> recognis<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>digenous compounds <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Murchis<strong>on</strong> came from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> discovery of racemic mixtures of am<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>o acids, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most<br />

recent activities <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> this area have <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>volved show<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g that <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> some <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>stances <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are<br />

slight excesses (5-10%) of L enantiomers <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> some compounds (Cr<strong>on</strong><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> & Pizzarello,<br />

1996). <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> great pa<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s taken with extracti<strong>on</strong> procedures suggest that this is a real<br />

effect ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than a result of c<strong>on</strong>tam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ati<strong>on</strong>. One proposed explanati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> results<br />

is that UV synchrotr<strong>on</strong> circularly polarised light, emitted by neutr<strong>on</strong> stars, might<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>troduce an antiomeric bias. If this explanati<strong>on</strong> turns out to be valid, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n while it<br />

could account <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> orig<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> of optical activity, it possibly calls <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> to questi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

whole philosophy of us<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g chirality as a means of detect<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g exobiology <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

extraterrestrial envir<strong>on</strong>ments <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> early <str<strong>on</strong>g>Solar</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>System</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Although <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> organic compounds, which are solvent-extractable from carb<strong>on</strong>aceous<br />

ch<strong>on</strong>drites, are treated somewhat warily because of c<strong>on</strong>tam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ati<strong>on</strong> issues, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

macromolecular material that comprises <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bulk of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> carb<strong>on</strong> is usually c<strong>on</strong>sidered<br />

as <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>digenous. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is no plausible way that such a large accumulati<strong>on</strong>, up to 5wt‰,<br />

could have accrued from c<strong>on</strong>tam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ati<strong>on</strong>. In any case, even <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> early 19th century,<br />

bulk carb<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tents were measured so<strong>on</strong> after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fall of specimens such as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> CI<br />

ch<strong>on</strong>drite Alais, and high carb<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tents were recorded at that time. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> carb<strong>on</strong><br />

isotopic compositi<strong>on</strong> of this material is remarkably c<strong>on</strong>stant (Smith & Kaplan, 1970;<br />

Kerridge, 1985) and relatively high <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> terrestrial c<strong>on</strong>tam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ati<strong>on</strong> anyway. Nitrogen<br />

isotopic compositi<strong>on</strong> is well outside of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> terrestrial range (Kerridge, 1985). It should<br />

be noted that when compared to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> carb<strong>on</strong>ates found <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same samples, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a<br />

relatively large fracti<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong>, 50-80‰, <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same sense as used by Schidlowski as<br />

an <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dicator of biogenicity (Schidlowski, 1987). Like kerogen <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Earth’s<br />

sedimentary rocks, meteorite macromolecules are very <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tractable, yield<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir general structure when broken down by various pyrolytic<br />

or oxidative techniques; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> build<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g blocks appear to be substantially aromatic.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a str<strong>on</strong>g likelihood that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> material c<strong>on</strong>stitut<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bulk of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> carb<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

carb<strong>on</strong>aceous ch<strong>on</strong>drites and unequilibrated ord<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ary ch<strong>on</strong>drites orig<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ates <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> dark<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>terstellar clouds. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> key results <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> this respect are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> recogniti<strong>on</strong> of substantial<br />

deuterium enrichments (Kerridge, 1993; McNaught<strong>on</strong> et al., 1981). Deuterium to<br />

hydrogen ratios approach<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g unity are encountered <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> small <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>terstellar molecules<br />

because of i<strong>on</strong>-molecule reacti<strong>on</strong>s, which encourage H to D exchange (Geiss &<br />

Reeves, 1981).<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> organic chemistry discussed above, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re have been <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>stances<br />

when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> existence of microfossils were suggested <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> carb<strong>on</strong>aceous ch<strong>on</strong>drites (Nagy<br />

et al., 1972), but such reports have been str<strong>on</strong>gly criticised, sometimes justifiably, but<br />

perhaps not always. It should not be c<strong>on</strong>sidered unscientific to <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dulge <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> detailed<br />

characterisati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> organic matter <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> carb<strong>on</strong>aceous ch<strong>on</strong>drites from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t of<br />

view of exobiology (Nagy et al., 1961) but as already stated this is almost a taboo<br />

area. As can be seen from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> am<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>o acid studies above, <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestigati<strong>on</strong>s are almost<br />

always motivated by abiogenic <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>terests, with large quantities of <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mati<strong>on</strong> ignored<br />

because c<strong>on</strong>tam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ati<strong>on</strong> is perhaps too readily <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>voked. Methods to recognise<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ati<strong>on</strong> should be fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestigated, us<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> example isotopic order, ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

than discard<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g unc<strong>on</strong>sidered large quantities of possibly useful data. Huge amounts<br />

of carb<strong>on</strong>aceous matter from carb<strong>on</strong>aceous ch<strong>on</strong>drites have been destroyed <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>
