I.6 Science and Experiment Strategy<br />
‘Dans le champs de l’observati<strong>on</strong> le hasard ne favorise que les esprits préparés.’ – Louis Pasteur, 1854.<br />
(‘Where observati<strong>on</strong> is c<strong>on</strong>cerned, chance favours <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> prepared m<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d.’)<br />
Pasteur’s observati<strong>on</strong> is particularly appropriate <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>text of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> search <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> life<br />
bey<strong>on</strong>d <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Earth. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>evitably a large measure of chance <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>volved <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g<br />
evidence of ext<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ct microbial life, and especially so when search<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> exist<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g life.<br />
But <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chances of success can be improved by tak<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g note of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> less<strong>on</strong>s to be learned<br />
from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Vik<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g missi<strong>on</strong>, from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relevant studies <strong>on</strong> Earth, as discussed <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Secti<strong>on</strong>s<br />
I.3 and I.4, and from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mati<strong>on</strong> derived from studies of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Martian meteorites,<br />
discussed <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Secti<strong>on</strong> II.3.<br />
To maximise <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chances of clear and unambiguous c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> existence<br />
of ext<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ct or extant life <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> any analysis, it is absolutely essential that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> coverage of<br />
search <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>strumentati<strong>on</strong> be broad enough to reduce <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opportunities <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> alternative<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>terpretati<strong>on</strong>s. At <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same time, each comp<strong>on</strong>ent <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>strument must be carefully<br />
designed so that it does not <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>m a serious weak l<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>k <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cha<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> of observati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
across <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>strument array.<br />
C<strong>on</strong>sequently, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> search science strategy is to provide, as far as possible, a selfc<strong>on</strong>sistent<br />
set of <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>struments that will give c<strong>on</strong>crete evidence, <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> or aga<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>st, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
existence of a range of biosignatures and associated images at a given search site. In<br />
order to do that, an <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tegrated package of analysis <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>struments is required.<br />
What must not be attempted, under any circumstances, is a search <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> biosignatures<br />
with <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>adequate <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>strumentati<strong>on</strong>. It would be foolhardy to attempt to establish <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> existence,<br />
or o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rwise, of life signs <strong>on</strong> <strong>Mars</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> example, by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use of a small narrowlybased<br />
measurement unit located at <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>adequately characterised land<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g site. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>evitable result<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g c<strong>on</strong>fusi<strong>on</strong> would simply discredit <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> subject of exobiology.<br />
Clearly, a strategy rely<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> careful collecti<strong>on</strong> of samples from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> planet and<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir return to Earth is highly desirable. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> experience from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lunar programme<br />
c<strong>on</strong>firms this. Indeed, this is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> route preferred by NASA <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> search <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> life <strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>Mars</strong>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> returned samples can <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n be subjected to <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>vestigati<strong>on</strong>s us<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> full<br />
spectrum of <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>strumentati<strong>on</strong> available <strong>on</strong> Earth by a diverse range of experts.<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> problem with such a strategy is that, quite apart from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cost and technical<br />
difficulties, it would be leav<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g too much to chance to mount such a project be<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>e<br />
carry<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g out a careful programme of explorati<strong>on</strong> and <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> situ analysis at several<br />
selected locati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <strong>Mars</strong>. We do not yet know, <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> example, from what depth<br />
samples must be obta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> order to be entirely free from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> effects of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> surface<br />
oxidant. Nor do we know which of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> currently listed sites <strong>on</strong> <strong>Mars</strong> are actually <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
most <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>terest<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is much to be d<strong>on</strong>e, and d<strong>on</strong>e well, be<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>e a sample return<br />
missi<strong>on</strong> should be attempted.<br />
In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> meantime, a sophisticated automated analysis system of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> type c<strong>on</strong>sidered<br />
here can pave <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> way with essential observati<strong>on</strong>s, as well as <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>clud<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g a large amount<br />
of <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> geochemistry and m<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>eralogy. It can do this with a reas<strong>on</strong>able<br />
chance of succeed<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first detecti<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> signatures of life.<br />
In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preced<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g chapters we have seen that life as we know it relies up<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
existence of water, above all else. Without that, life ceases or goes <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to a quiescent<br />
mode. Hence, a search <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> extant life translates <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first place <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to a search <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
liquid water. This may lie at some c<strong>on</strong>siderable depth below <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sterile surface of a<br />
planet, as could be <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> certa<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> areas of <strong>Mars</strong>. An orbital survey to def<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
water-ice boundary across <strong>Mars</strong> is of paramount importance. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case of Europa,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> water-ice boundary is likely to be many kilometres below <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> icy carapace, except<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> localised regi<strong>on</strong>s subjected to cryovolcanic flows.<br />
