life explorati<strong>on</strong>. Ice-covered lakes, such as those that developed <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gusev and<br />
Gale craters, had <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>al activity dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Amaz<strong>on</strong>ian era but, at least <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> Gusev,<br />
it has been shown that lakes may have occupied <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> crater episodically s<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ce its<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mati<strong>on</strong> dur<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Early Noachian period (Cabrol et al., 1996). In Gusev, as <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r comparable sites, life<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ms may have had <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opportunity to adapt <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> icecovered<br />
lakes envir<strong>on</strong>ment and to survive up to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> present, especially if <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> presence<br />
of ice-cored (p<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>go-like) structures is c<strong>on</strong>firmed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Mars</strong> Global Surveyor<br />
missi<strong>on</strong>. Thus, new c<strong>on</strong>cepts of drill<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g and wells may enable us to discover oases of<br />
life <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> subsurface, even at mid-latitudes.<br />
