<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> preced<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g Tables <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dicate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> types of <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>strumentati<strong>on</strong> that would normally be<br />

required <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> order to search <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> evidence of extant and ext<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ct life <strong>on</strong> <strong>Mars</strong>.<br />

Focus<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g up<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> evidence <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> ext<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ct life, we have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> follow<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g requirements:<br />

1. Optical Microscope, with a range from medium- to high-power to cover sample<br />

selecti<strong>on</strong> through to high-resoluti<strong>on</strong> observati<strong>on</strong> of larger ‘fossil’-like structures<br />

and associated m<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>erals.<br />

2. IR or Raman Spectrometer, designed to work <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>juncti<strong>on</strong> with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> microscope<br />

system <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> analysis of <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>dividual gra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s and any associated organic material.<br />

3. Atomic Force Microscope, allied to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stage of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> optical microscope, to<br />

exam<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> 3D <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nm-range selected elements of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> microscope field<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ta<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g possible fossils.<br />

4. Alpha-Prot<strong>on</strong>-X-ray Spectrometer, to carry out elemental analysis (exclud<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g H),<br />

<strong>on</strong> m<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>erals associated with ‘fossil’ sediments and <strong>on</strong> any associated<br />

carb<strong>on</strong>aceous material.<br />

5. Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer, to analyse <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> volatiles from carb<strong>on</strong><br />

residues, to provide elemental, molecular, and isotopic abundances, and<br />

compositi<strong>on</strong>s. Various types of vaporisers can be used.<br />

6. I<strong>on</strong> Microprobe, could be valuable, <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>juncti<strong>on</strong> with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> microscope, to<br />

analyse specific regi<strong>on</strong>s of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> samples that are associated with ‘fossils’ and to<br />

give structurally def<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ed 13 C/ 12 C ratios <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> organic traces.<br />

7. Homochirality detector, to search <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> optical activity. This may be a dedicated<br />

optical <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>strument us<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g a liquid sample or it may be simply a chiral column<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>cluded <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> gas chromatograph.<br />

8. Telescope, to search <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> macrostructures of possible biological orig<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> cleaved<br />

rocks or at outcrops. It would need to be associated with a spectroscopic<br />

capability.<br />

Clearly, it will not be feasible to carry all of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>struments <strong>on</strong> a s<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>gle small<br />

Lander. In mak<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g a selecti<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>struments to <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>m a unified package we have<br />

been c<strong>on</strong>scious of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> need to use <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>struments that have already flown or are under<br />

development <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> flight. In that c<strong>on</strong>text, we have looked to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> European <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>struments<br />

that are already associated with a <strong>Mars</strong> programme or are be<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g produced <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> a<br />

relevant <strong>ESA</strong> missi<strong>on</strong>, such as Rosetta.<br />

From that analysis, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> follow<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>struments were identified <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r study at<br />

this po<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>t (o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs, especially a spectrometer, may be c<strong>on</strong>sidered later if circumstances<br />

change):<br />
