II.7 C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s<br />
Three fundamental requirements were identified as need<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g to be satisfied if a search<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> evidence of life <strong>on</strong> <strong>Mars</strong> is to be c<strong>on</strong>ducted satisfactorily. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se are:<br />
i. <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> land<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g site must be selected as <strong>on</strong>e of high exobiology potential. That has<br />
not been <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case so far. Sites associated with sedimentary deposits, <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> areas<br />
relatively free from aeolian sand, would be prime targets.<br />
ii. sampl<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g that site must occur <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> several locati<strong>on</strong>s and should result <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> samples<br />
free from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> effects of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> surface oxidati<strong>on</strong> processes. Hence, mobility is<br />
needed, toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r with drill<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g systems that can reach well <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regolith and<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> surface rocks.<br />
iii. an <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>tegrated measurement set must be per<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>med <strong>on</strong> those samples such as to<br />
reduce <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> potential <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> ambiguity. Hence, observati<strong>on</strong>al, spectroscopic and<br />
analytical techniques should be used, which toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r can provide a coherent<br />
descripti<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> petrology, m<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>eralogy and geochemistry of that site.<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> preferred sites are generally located <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> large sedimentary terra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>s with low<br />
aeolian sand coverage. Hydro<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rmal sites may provide an alternative. Higherresoluti<strong>on</strong><br />
imag<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g of potential targets is needed, toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r with c<strong>on</strong>firm<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g m<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>eralogical<br />
mapp<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g. It was agreed that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> choice of sites would be narrowed down to<br />
five, selected us<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> above criteria, am<strong>on</strong>g o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs. Those currently identified are<br />
listed <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g> Table II.7.1/1. However, as new <str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mati<strong>on</strong> becomes available <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se may<br />
change. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> f<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>al site selecti<strong>on</strong> process obviously also has to take account of technical<br />
and missi<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>stra<str<strong>on</strong>g>in</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts.<br />
