In the present singularly favorableposition <strong>of</strong> science, it is impossible for thepublic mind to escape this tendency; but .itbecomes only the more imperative to distinguishas occasion <strong>of</strong>fers, those conclusionswhich are to be taken a.s final. This is <strong>of</strong>immense consequence as bearing upon generalconceptions concerning the universe.That matter can not be originated, <strong>and</strong> cannotf by even a single atom be destroyed, isone <strong>of</strong> those ultimate statements, upon which
