Hence it happens thatpopular favor runs deeply and strongly forthe kind and good; and science itself mustyield when the testimony of the race isuniform.Before closing this inquiry, it is desirableto pass over from the outstanding coiiceptionsof science and philosophy, to distinctive andprominent conceptions belonging to religiousthought, with the view of considering whetherthese can be held in harmony with the teachingof science. Of these, reference may bemade specially to two which encounter oppositio:~on professedly scientific grounds:-Miracleas an evidence of the Messiahship of ourLord Jesus Christ; and the efficacy of Prayerin the economy of spiritual life. These twoconceptions have encouiitered strong oppositionon the allegation of inconsistency withthe unchangeableness of the laws of nature.It becomes, therefore, an important part ofthe present investigation, to ascertain how farthese two articles of Christiaii faith, miracu-
