We are equally committed to identifying high-needs partners (defined by low student pass rates on Ohio<br />

achievement tests, high poverty level, or lower percentages of employed highly qualified teachers within<br />

the district) that desire high-quality, rigorous, and sustained professional development. Our approach then<br />

is two-tiered: to provide high-quality professional development opportunities for interested individuals<br />

and smaller non-high-needs school groups, and also to provide systemic professional development<br />

opportunities to a few targeted high-needs groups through both NWO activities and through our affiliated<br />

sponsored projects (COSMOS DREAMS, NWO TEAMS, REAL, Improving Teacher Quality Grants, etc.) that<br />

will result in changes at the institutional level (school, district, college, university).<br />

Our diverse efforts, described in detail below, fall into four categories:<br />

• In-service professional development<br />

• Pre-service professional development<br />

• Faculty development and collaborative research<br />

• Affiliated projects<br />

These efforts help us attain the vision, mission, and goals of the Center. The goals for 2008 are slightly<br />

restructured, placing more emphasis on recruitment into STEM and STEM education disciplines and in<br />

conducting collaborative research in science and mathematics education than in years past. This alteration<br />

is possible because the professional development and collaborative alliance goals require much<br />

less time and fewer human resources now that they are well underway and beyond the initial time and<br />

resource-intensive development phase.<br />
