NWO Activities and Accomplishments<br />

NWO attained the stated goals through the following aligned activities:<br />

In-Service Teacher Professional Development<br />

Northwest Ohio Symposium on Science, Mathematics, and Technology Teaching<br />

For the last four years, the Northwest Ohio Symposium on Science, Mathematics, and Technology<br />

Teaching (NWO Symposium) has brought together hundreds of participants to exchange effective<br />

strategies for teaching science and mathematics.This popular event has provided the Center with huge<br />

visibility in the community, attracting teachers to our long-term professional development<br />

opportunities, and giving all participants resources and ideas they can use in their classroom or setting.<br />

Because of our growing success, the 2006 Symposium continued in its two-day format, allowing us to<br />

increase the number of sessions available for higher education and K-12 instructors. This NWO<br />

Symposium was attended by 325 participants (pre-service and in-service teachers, faculty, and NWO<br />

staff ). Participants noted the impressive variety of the sessions and vendors, were pleased with more<br />

content, and had an overall positive experience. NWO will continue to expand this showcase event and<br />

adapt it to reflect emerging needs of our partners. In addition, as the profile of this event continues to<br />

grow, we continue to attract more prospective presenters; we can be increasingly selective in our<br />

presentations and offer a symposium that highlights the best in science and mathematics professional<br />

development. The 2006 NWO Symposium program is included in Appendix B.<br />

NWO/COSMOS Inquiry in Science and Mathematics Education Series<br />

Sustained professional development is also offered by NWO through its academic year NWO/COSMOS<br />

Inquiry Series. The Inquiry Series continues to be a highly popular professional development<br />

opportunity in the region. The Inquiry Series is also a monthly platform for the affiliated NWO<br />

projects to bring together their project participants for project-specific professional development<br />

(action groups) or general professional development (feature presentations). Monthly Inquiry Series<br />

meeting and action groups were attended by an average of 133 participants/month during the<br />

2006-07 academic year–an increase of almost 80%. The Inquiry Series is open to any teacher, faculty<br />

member, or school community partner in the region, and participants can opt to attend only one or<br />

all Inquiry Series events. Tuition scholarships are available through a cost share of the BGSU<br />

Graduate College. During the 2006-07 academic year, 15 actively participated in the entire series<br />

for two hours of graduate credit.<br />

The theme for the 2006-07 series was Investigative Science and Mathematics (see Inquiry Series<br />

brochure, Appendix C). The series started with a Blast-Off in the fall during which we featured a<br />

nationally recognized speaker in science/mathematics teaching, Lawrence Lowry. Participants then<br />

chose a breakout session presented by COSMOS faculty and partners showcasing high-quality<br />
