Becoming aware of what in your surroundingssets you off will help you take action <strong>to</strong> minimize exposure.Sensory DefensivenessDo you get overly stimulated easily by noise, bright lighting, odors, crowds, heights, <strong>and</strong> certain textures on your skin or light unexpected <strong>to</strong>uch? If so, you may besensory defensive, meaning that you perceive presumably harmless stimuli as dangerous, setting off your flight­fight response. The more sensory defensive, the moreyou overreact <strong>to</strong> fear provoking stimuli <strong>and</strong> the greater the likelihood, other fac<strong>to</strong>rs considered, of anxiety turning in<strong>to</strong> panic. Bright artificial lights exacerbate theagoraphobic's avoidance of public places such as malls.To help modify your level of agitation, become aware of what sensations easily bother you <strong>and</strong> modify your environment accordingly. For more information on sensorydefensiveness <strong>and</strong> how it can be treated, see Chapter 16 as well as Appendix B.Chemical SensitivitiesChemical sensitivities can precipitate allergic reactions <strong>and</strong> a host of psychological symp<strong>to</strong>ms­including anxiety <strong>and</strong> panic (see Chapter 3). Offending substancesinclude:DetergentsHousehold cleanersFormaldehyde (in carpeting <strong>and</strong> furniture)Cleaning fluid in dry­cleaned clothesSynthetic fabricsGasoline fumesInsect or extermina<strong>to</strong>r sprayNail polish remover, kerosene, turpentineFresh newspapersPerfumesFresh tarIf you are mildly sensitive, self­help may be sufficient <strong>to</strong> reduce your reaction, starting with avoidance.
